Only Sergeant Daddy Can Fix It
By LikeAStone
Every afternoon I open the front door
I wish it didn't creak anymore
But I don't how to make it stop
And daddy's in Iraq
Every night I come through the door that squeaks
I only allow the mirror to see my wet cheeks
I mail him every day this week
I ask him where he keeps the grease
He gets back to me when he's not busy killing
Tells me that the meals are hardly filling
Says that he read all of my letters
And he's sorry that things aren't going better
When he gets home he'll kiss my mother
He'll finally get to meet my new brother
He'll read to me when I'm under the covers
And our door will be as quiet as every other
This morning I'm in the garage and it's cold
All alone because dad's on the other side of the world
A five year old boy looking for one can of lube
Too young to read the labels on all the tubes
Later I walk home and pray that dad is still fine
I hope he didn't get shot - he's only 29
I open the door and close it behind
Then stop and pause - there was no creak this time
