The Way Things Should Have Been

You came to me in a dream
And asked if you could take my hand.
You said that we'd make things
The way they should have been.

And we strode arm in arm
Through the halls of time.
And somehow in this midnight parallel
I was yours and you were mine.

I don't know how it happened
Oh, but how I wish it would
The clocks can't be turned back
But oh how I wish they could.

I've missed your almost whisper of love
Since we each went our separate ways.
And your ghost has haunted my ghoulish heart
From the first of our dead days.

And far too often it's happened
That I have wept and I have cried.
I wish I would have loved you
Before the day I died.

But you went and you recovered
Not long after I was laid to rest.
And soon you found another
Who was better than my best.

So trapped alive in my black casket
Forever will I lie
Weeping for how it could have been
If only I would have tried.

And someday far off and hazy
There may come a time when
You'll kneel by my tomb in the night deathyard
Aching for the way it should have been.
Perhaps when your time comes
When the sweet breath is robbed of your faint lips
Yours will meet mine
In a heaven-light divine
And you'll say, that day,
When you gallantly take my hand
"My dear this is the way,
That things should have been."
