*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Blaze and Jackyl sat in wheely chairs in their cramped office-type room. Surrounding them were numerous televisions, computers and other complicated looking thingies.
One of the televisions was tuned to CNN while the others were live feed from various cameras in the nearby cities. Most of the computers were sleeping, but some were on news websites.
Blaze and Jackyl were talking to each other while still keeping a close eye on the television screens.
"So I said, you can take your crap and shove it up your - Blaze? Hey! I'm talking to you!" Jackyl said, noticing that Blaze was paying him no attention whatsoever.
"Shut your trap," Blaze muttered, looking at one of the TV's intently. The view was that of a crappy downtown back alley. The view was normal, except for one thing: a bug that had crawled onto the lens would walk partway across and then seemingly teleport back to its starting point.
Blaze wheeled back against a desk, picked up a phone and pressed a few buttons.
"Yeah?" said a strong male voice over the speaker.
Blaze put the mouthpiece to her face, "Hey, we've got a loop on Markelle, between Fern and Ninth. Can you run a scan on the cams in the surrounding areas for anything?"
"Right away," the voice said, hanging up.
Blaze hung up and wheeled herself back to the screen.
"Are you sure it's a loop?" Jackyl asked, studying the screen carefully.
"What else could it be? Bugs don't teleport like that," Blaze replied.
"Superbug?" Jackyl suggested.
Blaze gave him her patented "Pffft, whatever" look.
"Yeah, I guess you're right," Jackyl said.
"Of course I am," Blaze said as the phone rang. "Get that," she added.
"Yes, your Majesty," he said, bringing the phone mouthpiece to his mouth. "Yello," he said.
A different voice than before replied: "Hello. We have reason to believe that there is suspicious activity on Markelle between Fern and Ninth."
Blaze groaned, "We know! I'm the one who reported it!" she shouted.
The voice pretended not to notice Blaze's outburst, "We can't reboot the cameras so we're going to send you two over to check it out. Please report to Weapons and Protection for your equipment.
"Ugh," Blaze said, standing up.
Jackyl just looked at her as he hung up the phone.
"Get your ass in gear, dude!" she said.
"Yessir!" he said, standing up and saluting her.
"Cut the crap," Blaze said, hitting the button that opened the door and walking out.
Jackyl hurried after her and into another room further down the hall. This room was considerably larger than their cramped office thingie, with racks of guns and other weapons along the walls.
A portly man rushed over to them. "Blaze and Jackyl?" he asked.
The two nodded.
"Come with me," he said, leading them to a glassed-in chamber at the back. Inside was a desk with a VERY large gun, a smaller handgun and two small-ish black plastic boxes.
The man gestured to the equipment.
"Woohoo!" Jackyl said, taking the big gun.
"Yes, that's for you, along with one of the boxes. Blaze, you get the handgun and the other box," the man said.
"Thanks," Blaze said, inspecting her gun carefully.
Jackyl pressed a button on his box and it popped open (the box, not the button) to reveal two iris cams, a tiny microphone and an earpiece.
Blaze did the same.
"Ah, right," the man said. "The green camera is actually a screen, it will show you what the other person is seeing. The red one is the camera, it will send your view to your partner and to this screen here," the man pointed to a large plasma screen on the wall. "Shall we try them out?"
"Sure," Blaze and Jackyl replied in unison.
They carefully inserted the cameras, blinking furiously.
The man turned on the plasma and, after a moment or two of static, two images appeared. One was Jackyl's view, and the other was Blaze's. Also, in one of Blaze's eyes was Jackyl's view and vice versa.
"Cool," Blaze commented.
"And the microphones go onto one of your molars, the earpieces go in your ears," the man said.
The pair did as he said.
"Now you're hardwired. I assume you know how to use your weapons?" he said.
"Yeah," the pair replied.
"It looks like your good to go. Go through those doors, get a free Transporter, type the location, punch the button and your gone," the man said, pointing to a pair of doors at the opposite end of the chamber.
"Thanks," Jackyl said as he and his partner exited through the doors to the transport station.
All the Transporters were empty, but it is much easier to get as many people into one as possible, so Blaze, Jackyl (and Jackyl's gun) all squeezed themselves into one of the phone booth sized cubicles.
After closing the door, Jackyl reached to the small keypad and typed "Markelle, Fern, Ninth," and nodded to Blaze.
"Hand onto your ass," Blaze said, smacking the big red button on the side of the Transporter.
Seconds later, Blaze and Jackyl were squished in a phone booth a few blocks away from their final destination, feeling a little dazed and dizzy.
They stumbled out of the booth, steadying themselves against a light pole.
When she had regained her balance, Blaze spoke into her microphone, "Can someone get me a map?"
"Right away," replied a voice in her ear.
A few seconds later, Jackyl's view was replaced with a map of the city, little blinking lights indicating their location and their destination.
"Zoom in," Blaze commanded.
"Kay," was the reply.
The map zoomed in on the area between them and the goal.
"Thanks," Blaze said after a moment, "you can take it away now,"
The map disappeared and Jackyl's view returned.
"You know where we're goin' now?" Jackyl asked?
"Think so," she replied. She started jogging down the street, her hand on the holster attached to her right hip.
"Are these things supposed to be this itchy?" Jackyl asked, jogging beside Blaze.
"The camera and the screen?" she asked.
"No, my socks," Jackyl said sarcastically.
"No need to be bitchy," Blaze said. "Just don't scratch them, that would be very not good." She added
"No kidding," he said as they rounded a corner and saw what they were looking for: a group of semi-translucent people giving off a faint glow in the pitch black night.
"Are we just recon or what?" Jackyl asked his mic.
"Nope, go for it," the voice replied.
"Sounds like fun," Jackyl muttered, nodding to Blaze.
The two walked slowly up to the group of ghosts, almost invisible in their dark clothing.
The ghosts still hadn't noticed the pair, even when they were right up close.
Jackyl started to lift his gun, but Blaze pushed it back down.
"Why?" he whispered.
"If we want to catch at least one of them by surprise, we might want to use something a tidge more inconspicuous, hmm?" she replied.
"Ah, right," Jackyl said.
Blaze raised her gun, took aim, and fired.
Instead of a bullet, a thin beam of light shot out of the gun and hit the nearest ghost. There was a blinding flash of light, in which Blaze and Jackyl had to shield their eyes, and half the ghosts were gone.
The remaining ghosts looked around wildly.
"Ahem," Jackyl cleared his throat.
The ghosts' gazes became riveted on the pair.
"Yes, you can shoot now," Blaze said in response to Jackyl's silent question.
"Thank you muchly," Jackyl said, aiming. He fired, and like before, there was light instead of a bullet, a flash, only this time, all the ghosts were gone.
"Well done," Blaze said, patting Jackyl on the back.
Jackyl spoke into his microphone, "Okay, we're done here. What do we - Hey, Blaze, what the hell're you doing?"
Blaze had spotted a large black coat with something wiggling underneath it. She dropped her gun and ran towards the coat.
"Careful," the voice in her ear cautioned.
"I know, I know," Blaze replied.
She carefully pulled back the coat to reveal a pale young girl.
The girl gave a whimper.
"Shh," Blaze said, putting a finger to her lips, "It's alright,"
Jackyl walked over and squatted beside Blaze, "What've you found now?"
"I think she's still alive," Blaze muttered. "What's your name?" she asked the girl.
"Rain," the girl replied, barely above a whisper.
Jackyl rolled his eyes, "Great name," he muttered.
"Shut up," Blaze said. "I'm taking her with me," she wrapped the girl in the coat and picked her up. She was surprisingly light, despite her size.
