Eden Project: Playing God
Prologue
"Dr. Burton."
"Ah, Dr. Roberts, good to see you again."
"So why do you think Mr. Conway invited us?"
"I haven't the slightest, but if we don't hurry I think we'll be
late."
The group of scientific specialists hurried into the room took their
seats along the table, ready to convene the meeting. Each and every one of
them was wondering why the world's richest man wanted to talk to them, of
all people. Mr. Jacob Conway walked swiftly up to the podium, his burgundy
Italian dress suit tailored to follow his every move. He stared intently at
the mass of white coats before him with his sapphire blue eyes, leaned
close to the microphone before him. "Welcome gentlemen, and ladies, welcome
to the first of what I hope will be many peaceful meetings. I have invited
you all here from around the world to put forth a proposition. What
proposition, you might ask is so important, that I must call the leading
specialists in each field of science and study, from your diligent work?"
Many of the scientists mumbled in agreement. "I have summoned you to begin
work on a project that has only been seen in sci-fi. I ask you to change
history forever, I am asking you to play god."
A loud murmur of argument rose from the crowd.
"What's the meaning of this? We already know that cloning, and
creating new species was marked illegal by the UN!" protested one of the
scientists from the crowd. Many of those gathered stated their agreement.
Some of the scientists stood up to leave.
"Wait! Hear me out, you do not understand!" Mr. Conway pressed a
button disguised as a knot in the wood on the podium, locking all exits
from the room. Slam! The scientists tried to open the doors.
"They're locked! What the hell do you think your doing?" exclaimed
the scientist that had protested earlier.
"Ladies and gentlemen, now that I have your attention, will you
please take your seats, once more? Need I remind you that I paid each of
you a handsome amount for your time?" urged Mr. Conway. Seeing no other way
out, the scientists grudgingly obeyed.
"I believe that you will agree that over the last few millennia human
kind has grown soft. People have become too reliant on technology". Once
more a murmur rose amongst the unsettled crowd. "But I," Mr. Conway
interrupted, "have an answer".
"Not another one that wants to send man back to the days of the Cro-
Magnon," quipped a member of the audience, rousing some uneasy laughter.
"No, I assure you I have no plan to send people back. I intend to
move forward! I wish to construct the next step in human evolution.
Imagine, if you would, a world where man need not fear the elements, but
where the elements fear man. A world where one could summon the very wrath
of the sky, move the earth with ease, or cause plants to grow. A world
where man truly rules. I have gathered you here to produce a human
genetically engineered to control the elements. I have already selected a
leader for this process, should she choose to accept her position. Dr.
Amelia Burton, will you please stand. I have selected you, as the world's
most renowned Genetic biologist, to lead this project. Do you accept? You
have already been mailed your salary offer."
Amelia looked at her colleagues, with her piercing black eyes, and
stood firmly, "I accept on the condition that I may select a group of six
others to lead the project, and that I may be granted complete control over
the project resources."
"Done."
"I also would like to be granted complete control over security,
employees, and public relations, on the project."
Mr. Conway paused for a moment, to consider all aspects of the
request. Hesitantly he responded, "very well."
An uproar erupted from the crowd. Most turned to leave through the
now unlocked doors, but a few stayed to discuss details of the project.
Chapter 1
"Hey cap'n I think we found somethin'."
"Well, what in the bloody hewl is it? Is it a way we can sneak up on
those damn Blood Angels?"
