Twin Paths
By Global Nomad
Chapter One
Annabelle’s POV
Science is fascinating! A couple of years ago I found an old text book of my fathers in his study on science. I read the entire thing and then read it again. Then I asked my father if I could get more books like that one.
“Belle, dearest, you know ladies don’t read such things. Whatever would you use your knowledge for?” he said to me. I was sixteen at the time and was at the age when everyone started up about me being a proper lady. And almost everyone used the same phrase, “Annabelle, why can’t you be more like your sister?” As if twins are the same in everyway.
Well they’re not! Well at least we aren’t. Clara and I are almost as different as day and night. Oh we do have our petty similarities but nothing major. Our goals for our lives are especially different, it’s like we are following two paths that run in opposite directions.
While Clara is a true romantic with thoughts of falling in love and getting married to the perfect man, I want to be a scientist. I want to go to a university and study to be a scientist. Now doesn’t that sound much more interesting then falling in love and getting married? I sure think it does.
And so while my not-so-original twin sits in her husband’s house sewing and taking care of babies I’ll be discovering new cures and other interesting things. Unfortunately that future looks very dim right about now. The only school my father has, and probably ever will, send me to is finishing school. While my sister came out of the school with new friends and the teacher’s good graces, I came out with one friend, a very good one actually, and several note of complaints to my father.
That was five months ago. Now through that one friend, Sarah, I was able to get my science books and a means of escape from this awful life.
