This is based on a dream I had in which my mom didn’t want me to do "guy stuff"—fixing cars, welding, and all that fun stuff. Please note that this song in no way reflects my actual attitude or relationship with my parents. I do believe I have the most wonderful parents on the planet. Oh, and this is a song, so if it feels like it doesn't flow quite right, please remember that the tune is in my head, and of course it isn't quite the same without it. I do welcome suggestions on how I can make it better, though.

Mama and Daddy are standing in the kitchen
As I pour myself some juice to drink.
Daddy’s reading a 3-day-old paper
While Mama peels carrots in the sink.
Daddy looks at me and smiles;
Says, "I’ve got a job for you."
Mama frowns as the throws the peelings away:
"You’ll be a lady before I’m through."

Chorus:
Rev up the Bronco,
Pull back the lever,
Throw all your dreams away.
Found a picture of Mama
In a combine with Daddy
Mowing a big field of hay—
She doesn’t know about that.
Oh Mama, can’t you see
That everything I want to be
Is standing underneath
Daddy’s hat.

Late afternoon I’m out in the garage
Polishing a rusty old car
Daddy says I did as good a job as he could—
I feel like a shining star.
Mama’s voice floats on the air—
"Girl, would you come here to me?"
I look at Daddy for help; he just shrugs and laughs
As I climb the stairs to make my plea.

(Chorus)

Evening now with the lamps shining bright,
I stab a needle into the cloth.
Mama’s nearly done with her patchwork—
I feel like an antiquated sloth.
Mama smiles in approval as she checks my work:
"I think you’ve done enough for today."
I try and be a lady like she wants me to,
But I just want to run away.

(Chorus)
