Remember the Memories

Chapter 9

They stepped on the floor. Seeing that the only empty spot was in the middle, they made their way towards it. Once they reached their destination, Melly took a deep breath and turned around to face him. She put her left hand on the back of his neck while he automatically put his right hand on her waist. They tangled their free hands together and started dancing to the waltz.

Cody's Mind was reeling. Being with her this close... He inhaled deeply and smelled roses. He was seriously going crazy. He needed a diversion. Something amazing. Something dynamic. Something that nobody would ever remember! He began mutter under his breath.

"Hydrogen. Helium. Keep them in their proper atomic order. Lithium. Berylium. Boron. Carbon..."

Melly listened intently and smothered a smile. She cleared her throat. "Uh, Cody?"

He hadn't heard her. "Nitrogen. Oxygen. Fluorine..."

"Cody?" She asked, tilting her head to the right, only to bang her temple on his jaw.

"Yeah?"

She smiled. "Cody, I'm not used to being recited at. I'm not that boring, you know. I do believe I'm better than the Periodic Table of Elements, wether it is in order or not."

He tightened his hold on her waist. She felt it and decided to tease him. "Captain Butler, you must not hold me so tightly. Everyone is looking."

Cody looked at her sparking, limpid eyes. So that was how she was going to play. Very well then, he'd show her. "If no one were looking, would you care?"

Melly's eyes widened. "You've read the book?"

He shrugged, a feat while dancing. "Extensive reading."

She laughed. "Whey do I not believe you?"

"So you're saying I wanted to read it for pleasure?"

"It's just so romantic," she said, sighing.

"If you say so."

She bit her lips as she thought. "I just feel so sorry for Scarlett, though."

"She deserved it," came the startling reply.

"What?" She gelped, and turned her face to meet his completely.

"She's a spoiled brat."

She stared at him for a moment then twisted her lips in a smile. "I'm sure you'd know, Cody. I'm sure you'd know."

He lifted his eyebrows. "And what's that supposed to imply?"

"Noth-"

"WALLAS!"

They both stopped twirling and suddenly seemed to realize how close they were. Uh-oh. Charles's livid face on the other side of the room didn't seem to bode well.

With a mischievious grin not unlike Bill and Kevin's, She quickly turned around and pressed her back into Cody's front, then moved his arm around her waist, to his evident surprise.

She was ready for battle.

"WALLAS!" Charles was only a few yards away from them with Carl and Ashley (as expected) close behind.

Ashley had an spologetic look on her face. 'I tried to keep him from seeing you,' she mouthed behind his back.

Melly raised her slender right hand as if to imply that everything was right and under control. Not the best word to apply to the fuming Charles who currently had smoke coming out of his nose and ears. Here goes nothing. She smiled angelically.

“Hullo, Charles,” she said pleasantly. “Carl.” She nodded at him, slightly surprised that his green eyes were and his pancake- Neli (as she was so fondly referred to by Melly) wasn’t beside him.

“Melly. What. Do. You. Think. You . Are. Doing. In. This. Idiot’s. ARMS?” Charles tried to keep his anger centered to Cody, but couldn’t. When he was angry, he was angry at everybody involved. And now his SISTER! God, his SISTER! Was dancing with him!

“Really, Charles,” she said, looking at her nails with a bored expression. “You haven’t been in Greenhills for all these year with just caveman language for communication have you? Next thing you’ll be doing is graduating to two word sentences!” She raised her head, and clapped her hands together in mock joy. “Isn’t that fun?”

Ashley’s expression told her that she might be overdoing it a little.

Charles spoke. “Melly, I want to know what you’re doing with this, this idiot.” He spat contemptuously.

“Aw, Charles, you act as if it was a bad thing,” she pouted slightly.

Carl spoke up. And when he did, the anger was so concentrated it made Cody’s eyebrows quirk. “These people like him are just plain evil. They somehow always turn bad into the society.”

“Don’t you go blaming everything on Cody.” Melly argued.

They looked uncomfortable. Charles spoke first.

“You still haven’t answered why you’re with this filthy idiot.”

“Charles, really,” She smiled as if a two year old child throwing a tantrum. “He’s not filthy. He’s quite clean. He smells quite nice.” She turned her head around, until her face was against him. Inhaling deeply, she sighed loudly for the effect, hiding her smile, almost hearing steam coming off of Charles. His eyes bulged, but Ashley still had a firm grip on the back of his suit.

She continued, facing Charles again. “I don’t think he’s an idiot either. Last time I checked, he had better grades than you did.”

Charles Blushed furiously and thought of what to say next. Melly impatiently rolled her eyes.

This might annoy him a little. “Did you know that if you look at a river and if it looks blue then whoever looked at it is in love but incredibly brown and murky to those who aren’t?” She sighed overdramatically. “I’m wondering what shade of blue it would be to me right now.”

Charles decided to just say whatever comment came to his head. He couldn’t watch his sister and Wallas dance together. Eww. Or have her look at the river either. He wasn’t going to risk it, no matter how stupid and utterly idiotic that sounded. “Melly, just get away from him” He was getting desperate. “You don’t want me to get angry, do you?”

That evoked something from her. “You? Angry? Remember all the times I got angry? Wasn’t good. Nope. Really not good. Remember the last time something happened? After 6th grade?”

“I want to play your water gun.” Melly pouted.

“Um…”

“Sure why not? It would even up the teams,” Kevin agreed.

“No,” Charles said decisively.

“What?” Melly snapped, as she turned her head towards him.

“No.”

“Charles why not?”

“It’s not for little girls to play.”

“Hah! You’re just afraid I’d soak you.”

“No. Just stay inside the house.”

Her eyes slit. If there was anything she hated it was being told what to do. “Just because that little incident happened in the kitchen.”

“No,” he said, nervously looking about him.

Kevin wisely backed off by the doorway. Though he didn’t want to be near the whole situation, it would be very interesting. Bill went to get a camera just incase something happened between Charles and Melly.

“What do you expect me to do? I mean just because I ‘accidentally’ sprayed everyone with the sink holes and lost control of it, doesn’t mean I have to stay away from water related materials forever. Besides, being a bigger brother, you are supposed to make me feel better about it.”

“Who do you think you are? You’re barely a YEAR older than me!” Looking toward the kitchen table, Melly saw a bowl of tomato sauce. And in just a split moment, Bill and Kevin saw a scene which made them double up in laughter.

Charles’s face dripped with bloody red tomato sauce.

Melly, looking pleased walked out of the room.

CLICK. And Bill had taken a picture.

“You had a bowl of tomato paste all over your face and head and you couldn’t do anything about it. Just think what will happen this time if you’re not careful. Think, Charles. Think really hard.” She paused, and then smiled again. “Am I mistaken in thinking you still want to stand around talking like a doddering fool? Or can we go back to our dance?”
