Author’s Note:

Yay! I finally wrote a short story after a LONG time of writers’ block! (does a little dance)

Oh, and one more thing, this is not a ‘how-to’ composition. This is a short story, and a half-true one. Yes, I’m writing a bit about my life here. :P Also, at first I didn’t intend to make it funny, but somehow, all of my friends said this is funny… Yet I don’t ‘feel’ funny when I wrote it. :P

Summary for “Dealing With Writers’ Block”:

Writers’ block is my greatest enemy in the story world! My fingers itched to type a short story, but this BLOCK had been overpowering me for more than a MONTH! Read this half-true story to find out how I got rid of it! Well, at least for a while. --COMPLETE--

Dealing With Writers’ Block

Written by Blue Dragon-sy

I held onto the piece of paper that was full of scribbles, staring at it as if it was an alien from outer space. Many would have thought that this paper belonged to a child, for the writing was truly illegible to most people. It wasn’t to me, however.

“Argh! I can’t even call this WRITING!!” I screamed and furiously crumpled the paper into a roll, tossing it into a dustbin that was already filled to the top with crumpled rolls – all of them as results of failure in the past few hours.

With that, I sighed as I got off the chair, grabbed a fluffy teddy bear to hug and threw myself on my bed – a single bed next to another single bed that belonged to my younger sister. Never before I was so glad that she was asleep, for she would tease me again and again for having writers’ block.

Writers’ block.

Argh, how I hated those two words! Not only that, but artists’ block, composers’ block and arrangers’ block as well! I love sketching, writing, composing music and arranging sheet music, so why must I be cursed with BLOCKS?!

I sighed once more, this time trying to calm myself down, and I decided not to continue writing after agonizing hours of staring at blank pieces of paper. Getting up, I took my towel and went into the bathroom to take a shower. The water was warm and rather inviting, and if my mother didn’t tell me to save water I would seriously spend hours in there!

The silence in the bathroom – except the sound of the shower – was truly peaceful. This could be paradise in one way, I laughed. Suddenly, something crept into my mind – an inspiration!

“Yes!” I cheered and continued to form the inspiration into a composition – since I was wet I couldn’t take a piece of paper to write. Water certainly does certain wonders, I would say.

Once I was done bathing, I hurried to get into my white shirt and shorts and jumped onto the chair once more, picking up the pencil to write down the ideas that had formed in my mind. But to my frustration, I had forgotten them! Talk about ‘incredible’ memory, I grumbled.

Now, with the inspiration forgotten, I went to the kitchen to pour myself some of my apple juice. As I sat at the dining room chair, sipping the juice in the silence of the night, inspirations continued to come. Once again I cheered and then (nearly spilling my cup of juice) made my way as fast as I could to my room, once more grabbing my pencil and paper to write down my ideas.

But right after I wrote “Inspirations”, I had no idea what to write! I had forgotten my ideas again!

“Oh my God!” I screamed. “Darn my short-term memory!!”

If this were to be a show on TV, I would laugh my head off, but this wasn’t funny while I was experiencing it! No, it was just one HECK of a frustrating experience! I would have pulled every single black hair out of my head, but I loved my hair so I didn’t. I would have banged my fist on my study table, but that would wake my sister up (and turn the bedroom into an incredible battlefield). I could just strangle someone, but other than my sister, there was only my dear little white kitty sleeping on my bed, and I wouldn’t strangle her.

Sighing once more, I decided to go ahead and sleep, because I had to go to work on the next day, back in the hectic old place.

That night, I had a really strange dream. It was probably due to hoping for an inspiration too much, I figured. I dreamt that I was walking through a richly decorated and bright hall with its wall filled with modern art pictures that I could never understand. The scenery was slightly hazy, though, as if I had forgotten to put on my glasses. All dreams are like that, I suppose.

But oh! I was getting the red carpet treatment! Yes, I was walking along the stunning red carpet that I used to see only on TV, something that I knew I would never get in the real world. Besides that, I was following and being followed by several people in formal clothing to large double doors, listening to the cheers from the people on my left and right. Their faces were hazy as in every single one of my dreams, and everyone was unfamiliar to me. Who were they clapping for, anyway?

When I saw their smiles that were directed at me, I was truly astonished. What, me? I knew that this was a dream though, but I certainly didn’t want to wake up. No, not when I was being treated as a guest of honor!

At this point, I arrived at the double doors. Past them was a huge dining hall with really bright lights and a large stage on one side, like a place where awards were given out. In the dream, I knew that I had to receive an award of some sort – an award for writing, I think.

I was led up to the stage, shocked, towards another unfamiliar man holding a huge shining golden trophy in his hands. I heard my name being mentioned as he held the trophy out towards me. Unexplainable joy surged through me as I held out my hand to receive it, my ears oblivious to the sound of clapping from the crowd, but to my annoyance a high-pitched beeping sound interrupted.

At that point, my eyes snapped open. The beeping sound continued, and I growled. Trust that stupid alarm clock to wake me up in the middle of my sweet dreams! I slammed the alarm clock silent, but I couldn’t just go back to sleep, for I knew that I had to get to work.

As I entered the bathroom once more for another shower, I had yet another inspiration! This time it was not just an idea, for it could get rid of my writers’ block! I cheered again and did a little dance in the bathroom.

I got ready and went to work, the inspiration forming in my mind. It was another hectic day at my workplace, but time whizzed by and soon I was going home again.

Chasing my sister off the computer, I quickly set down to start typing a story. What sort of story, you ask? Why, the story about dealing with writers’ block of course! What else could I write? Instead of fighting my enemy, I was using it to get rid of it! Smart, aren’t I?

And so, this story was written and posted in among my other stories. Right after that, I got another inspiration! Yeah! I quickly wrote the ideas down and started working on another story, something I call “Eyes of the Wolf”. Yes, I would post the story after a while of working on it.

I was so proud of myself, managing to write a story even when the writers’ block was dominating, plus getting an inspiration so quickly! I laughed in satisfaction – actually rather like an insane villain ready to destroy the world – and gained strange stares from my family members.

The next day, however, was a different story altogether. I was no longer so proud of myself, for I was screaming once again.

“Aaaaaaaargh!! Darn my short-term memory!!”

I guess this thing called writers’ block would never truly go away.

Author’s Note:

Yes, this story is half-true! :D I have writers’ block all the time, I get inspirations in the showers, and I have short-term memory! :P

Btw, sooner or later I’d post another story, something called “Eyes of the Wolf”, okay? I’m currently working on it, and revising “Shadow Claw” as well. So, look out for these updates soon! :D
