---
A perfect silence came to bear
The daylight to its grave;
I looked upon the last red rays
That glimmered on each wave.
I'd never known another world
So calm but oh, so cold.
Though evening yet was hale and young,
The day was bent and old.
Soft music now through twilight crept,
And sand between my toes.
I thought of life and love and joy;
My quiet heart it froze.
