I don't tell them
that I don't sleep at night
and I wonder whether or not
this life is worth saving
while the unawares are paving
paradise
for a new kind of time
where the clock doesn't chime
every hour.
My eyes used to be open like
doors in small-town summer
but I closed them when the leaves fell
and now snow banks
against the windows and the walls
down the stairs and through the halls
sings my echoed silent sacreligious sleep
the reverb I can pawn, but the secrets I can keep
