Snow day

Snow falls like white droplets As if magic Anything can happen On a Snow day

It was January 28th, the snow which had been threatening to fall for a week now had finally done so, much to some's delight and others dismay. I woke up with the cold resting on my feet, even under my two duvets I shivered, my alarm was declaring 6.30am in my ear, I rolled over and switched it off. The Chinese curtains in my room didn't quite block out the light, I rolled over again and climbed out of bed, outside there was four inches of snow delicately sitting on the grass blades of the front lawn. Hamlet was a quiet town on the edge of city, it was one with ample shops for its area, a quiet park, small health centre, the one big supermarket on the outskirts and at the moment a white background. I could see the church steeple from my window, it looked like a giant (silly I know) ice cream hung above the trees. The wind at this time was still but I could still see the snowflakes dancing through the air, the school most certainly would be closed for today. Snow day!! I thought to myself and ran down the stairs, even though I was on the brink of my GCSE's I could certainly manage one day off due to the forces of nature, flicking on the radio, the deep newsreaders voice did in fact confirm my thoughts, my school would be closed for the day.

Across Town

"Jonathan, I've just heard the radio they closed Holderness High, you have a day off dear" a female voice shouted up the stairs of the Walker house hold just across Hamlet. Jonathan Walker finished fastening his tie as he heard this message emitting from the kitchen along with the smell of toast and coffee. "Oh thank you sweetheart, what about the kids" Jonathan replied coming down the stairs adjusting his glasses. "The kids school is open, and so is mine, so it's just you that is closed for snow" she replied. "Haha" Jonathan said to his wife. Reagan Walker had been his wife for 20 years and lately the couple had been having problems owing to Reagan's constant working and obsession with the school she went to everyday. Both of the Walkers were teachers, the sort of couple who were too alike it was unreal, but unlike Jonathan, Reagan had a jealous streak, she was what one would call possessive of her husband, one quality Jonathan had never really liked either when he was a boy at Public school or a teacher at a high school. "Behave yourself" Reagan said as she pulled on a scarf and coat grabbing her keys from the work top, and calling the two children both of whom came down the stairs groaning at the cold. "Bye kids, bye flossy, Bye Olli" Jonathan shouted from the table over his cup of tea (one sugar). The door crashed shut and Jonathan gave a sigh of relief and flicked over the pages of the Newspaper. The Headline declared 'Freak Weather expected'. Hmm a bit late for that Jonathan thought as the toaster popped two brown slices of bread from it's insides.

My parents had gone to work by the time I had roused myself from my bed once more, after seeing outside I decided against getting up just yet. There was a note on the kitchen table it read Dear Fleur,
Snow day, lucky you, make sure you empty the dishwasher and walk the dog, have a good day love from mum xxx.

I glanced across at Faith our German shepherd sleeping quietly in her dog basket, we could wait an hour until the snow lifts slightly, I thought, suddenly the phone rang, swinging my legs off my chair I dashed across the kitchen and reached the portable telephone. "Hello" I said into the receiver. "SNOW DAY" was the only reply I received. "Yeah I know Rosie great huh" I said to the screaming voice i.e. my friend Rosie Gibbons. Rosie lived in the city about four miles away from me, she would be spending her day shopping and watching DVD's there would be no change to a usual weekend for her whether snow or not. "Snow day, im off shopping see you later" she said in to the receiver, before putting it down on me. "Well that was interesting" I said aloud to Faith who raised her head and looked at her lead. "Oh Okay, let my put on some clothes and we'll go" I said to the restless dog and went back upstairs.

"Liquorice, where are you, silly dog" Jonathan shouted at the garden glancing around looking for his black crossbred Labrador. Seeing snow flying Jonathan watched as his dog bounded into view looking hopeful. "Yes We are going for a walk boy" He said to the panting dog whilst clipping the red lead to his matching collar. Jonathan adjusted his grey fleece slamming the door behind him he stepped out of the warm house the cold hit him like a thousand knives, still the town was a beautiful sight, even liquorice seemed to approve of Hamlets beauty that morning. Jonathan glanced at his car as he walked out of the drive, the blue Renault was covered in snow, he would have to de ice it later if he wanted to go out in it and get out of the drive. Clearing his throat and watching his breath steam up in front of him, Jonathan walked down to the end of the street Liquorice at his heels. Even though the weather was pretty abysmal the town centre was still full of people going about their daily routines, the chocolateria was still open and a few school children made snowmen around having snowball fights. That would be one thing he would not miss about being at work today, dealing with kids with broken noses given to them by their enemies and a cold hard snowball. Jonathan was a senior teacher at Holderness high which gave him as much power as a deputy, and also made him a target for snowballing by a few naughty children whom he had caught smoking and suspended. "The chores of a teacher" he said aloud to no one in particular, humming to himself Jonathan turned a corner and was nearly run over by an over excited German Shepherd and its owner. "Miss Byers", he said a large smile spreading across his face. "How lovely to see you". I nearly fainted in shock.
