Cage

Author’s Notes: This is based on a dream I had that was too beautiful for words… yet I tried to put it into words. I don’t know how the existence thing slipped in, though. And yes: passive sentences galore. I seem to be more productive at night; I wrote this and Sense Number Five in the dark by Gameboy Advance SP light… I think I broke ten billion grammar rules writing this, at least the way morchaint is going on. xD

The structure was encased in a box completely made of glass. Pale fingertips touched the brass doorknob. Hesitating, they made their decision, and the door was opened.

Tall trees made a forest around the box, the canopy of leaves blocking the sunlight, shading the interior. The mind could remember days in its youth swinging in the jungle gym as eyes contemplating their setting, watching the structure as though it would move. Metal bars linked together, creating a spider’s web of iron. The web curved, a dome, clawing for the sky, stretching over forty feet in its attempt.

Feet walked towards the web, a body passing through a gap in the strands. A head tilted back as eyes stared into the canopy, then lowering to marvel at the structure, so simple, yet so elegant, majestic, and strangely beautiful.

But the brain knew that the entire immensity of the web was only as small as gossamer strands thin in comparison to existence.

“What are you doing here?”

Ears heard the sneering voice. The body turned to let the eyes see the girl leaning against the bars. The girl seemed the opposite of the structure, her petite frame clothed a skin-tight shirt and skin-tight jeans. The brain knew that her ego was larger than existence. Scientific learnings whispered that she balanced the equation.

“I am not here…” The ears heard the soft movement of the lips as they murmured the sounds the voice box made in accordance to the brain’s thoughts.

“If you’re not here, then where are you?” The mouth set itself into a frown as the brain pondered the question.

“Nowhere,” was its cryptic answer.

“And if you are nowhere, then how are you here?”

“I am not… But I am.”

The body tensed as eyes saw the hand reach forward. It settled on her shoulder, and the pieces pulled themselves together, forming one existence.

She smiled, and a smile was given in return. Such was also beauty.

“Beauty comes in many strange packages,” I murmured, and we were gone.
