Chapter 1: The First Day
A/N: About the title...I'm following the tradition of anime shows that have titles that have nothing to do with the show itself. So that's why we have this oddball title. But this fic isn't really anime...
This is a prequel to Sancho and Zoek, another story I've written. It doesn't matter if you've read that one or not, but I suggest you do because I need a reason to shamelessly plug. XD Sorry. Okay, getting on with the story!
--
I looked over at the alarm clock. 7:34AM, late again...but it wasn't like anyone cared.
The smell of Mom's cooking seeped in from the kitchen. Pancakes...wonderful things...all I wanted to do was lie in bed and take in the scent. Lazy days were always the best.
Mom knocked on the door. "Sancho! What happened? You're going to be late."
"Shut up, I know..."
"You don't want to be late for your first day of high school, do you?" She opened the door and began pulling the covers away from me. Goodbye warmth, I'll meet you again at bedtime.
Heh...I need an introduction, don't I?
My name's Sancho Tristanburg. 15 years old, wasting my life away every day, trying to keep a secret from everyone. It's this secret that basically ruins my life and makes me the object of ridicule and harassment among everyone. You know what it is?
...I'm not human. ;
I'm actually half-demon. There are two large, black leathery wings coming out from my back. They're sorta like bat wings. Yes, I can fly with them. Seems cool, doesn't it? Well, no one else thinks so. I live in Conservative-Christians-R-Us, so I'm greatly hated as some reincarnation of Satan. People on the street have actually thrown rocks at me once. They kick me, push me around...waiting to watch my fly away.
Quite depressing.
But it was going to change this year! Because this year, I was going to bind my wings to my back, meaning no one would see them! I'd look like a perfectly normal human being at last!
I threw on some clothes, got my stuff, and went out the door. There wasn't really a bus, so I had to run on the sidewalk down the hill and around the curve. We lived in the city, in a sucky little apartment. Dirt poor, of course...because my mother was a fairy and my dad was a human (not born in the US, of course). I was adopted, so was my little sister.
I ran as fast as I could around the block to school. Heh, no more three separate middle schools to travel between. One big high school housing the 9-12 grades.
...
When I got to the door, I just realized something kind of important. I forgot my schedule. I hadn't toured the building. I had no map.
On top of that, I was late.
Some hall monitor looked at me glaringly when I entered. "Excuse me?"
"Damnit, where's the guidance center? I need my schedule." ...Oops.
"My, we have quite a mouth, don't we? Would you like to say that again in the dean's office?"
"I'm sorry, it's just that I forgot my schedule and I don't have a map...and I'm late." I looked at her. If this was any indication of how the rest of the staff was, I was in for a rough ride.
"The guidance center is right around the corner on your left. Oh, and you're going to need a late pass from the main lobby."
--;; I went on my merry way.
On the way to the guidance office, I spotted the head cheerleader from last year's squad. She winced at me. "Hey, demon."
"Shut the hell up or I'll use my demonic powers to burn you." I did have some fire power in me, but it wasn't enough to inflict any damage to anyone.
"Oooh, is that a threat? You know, just because your wings are tied back this year doesn't mean you're a human."
"Just because I'm blond too doesn't mean I'm as dumb as you."
"...What did you say?" She looked at me questioningly, then walked on and turned the corner. I hated her...her name was Mari. Every week she would have a new boyfriend, then last week's would be the new talk of the school, to be humiliated and harassed daily.
I opened the door to the guidance center. A line of various people were patiently waiting for their turn at the desk. Some stoners forced to get appointments scheduled, some geeks wanting to be in higher classes, and some new kids. When I took my place in the line, the guy ahead of me turned around and smiled.
"Hi! D" He was very short, with green hair that hung down in the front and seemed to frame his face in a moon-shape. His eyes were a bright violet.
I looked down at him. "Hey. What're you here for?"
"I'm new here. Getting my schedule." He smiled at me...with every move that he made, he seemed to sparkle and shine. He was one of those people who could be happy no matter what, and it showed.
"Ah, that's what I'm here for. 'Cept I'm not new, I forgot it at home. What's your name?"
"Zoek. You?"
"Sancho Tristanburg. Learn it now; you'll be hearing it again." Yeah, you'd probably hear it again when the other people talk behind my back.
"So, uh...where are you from, Zoek?"
"Here! I went to a private school. I just finished 7th grade. The people there told me that public schools are way behind, so I get to skip 8th. I'm so lucky! "
"Lucky ."
The exhausted secretary handed a student a schedule and called for the next person. Zoek asked for his schedule, and then waited for me to get mine before leaving.
"Let's compare! " Damn...was he always this irregularly happy? It was beginning to get on my nerves.
I held up my schedule to his. Oddly enough, we had every class together except for our electives and foreign languages. "Weird...usually everyone gets different classes."
"I guess I'll see you in history class, then. We have different homerooms." I blinked at the paper. Zoek's last name was Gallagher. The homerooms were grouped by last name, and T and G were nowhere near each other in the alphabet.
So we left, and he went the opposite way I was going. I went to the main lobby, got my pass, and headed for room...checks 69. I couldn't help but snicker at the number.
"Oh, you must be Sancho, right? You're a bit late."
"Yeah, yeah. I have my pass." I looked out at the rest of the class. They were all staring at me. 32 pairs of eyes and a third of them hated me already.
"Hey, look! It's Satan!"
;; I wished the evil person would go away.
--
So my first class was history.
I saw a lot of people I already knew. My best friend Kai (my only friend, really), last year's ex-girlfriend (after I dated her, I decided I was gay), a few more stoners (...well, its high school. What'd you think?), Mari (DIE!), the crazy fangirl that always stared at me (because I'm her beautiful demon), and Zoek.
Kai motioned for me to sit next to him, so I did. "Have a good summer?"
"No." Kai was a man of few words.
"...Okay then. Same here."
Zoek sat down next to me. "Hi again! D"
"Hey, Zoek. Kai, this is Zoek ;; We uh, met five minutes ago. And Zoek, this is Kai. My bestest buddy ;"
Kai said nothing, just nodded.
"Hi Kai! How are you?"
...Nothing. The blue-haired boy seemed to stare out into the distance.
"Er, hi?"
"Kai is a man of few words," I said. "Whatever they are, they aren't wasted."
"...Oh. ; Okay then!" Zoek put his hand on my knee. "I hope we become good friends!"
I blinked. No one had ever wanted to be my friend. Not even that dumb fangirl wanted to talk to me, rather just stare and admire. So, I decided to tell him right away, just so this doesn't end up to be something painful later on.
"Um...look. See all these people? Most of them hate me. That's because I'm not human. I'm half demon, half human. If you associate yourself with me, you're going to be hated. So I suggest you back off now while you still have the chance. I'm not trying to be mean or anything..."
I expected him to say something like, "What?...Oh my God! You're a freak!" just like everyone else. Didn't happen.
"Really? That's so cool! Can you tell me more later?"
I stared wide eyed. No one, NO ONE...had ever reacted in that way upon hearing that I was half demon.
"Um...okay. oo Are you sure you're okay with that?"
His eyes were bright and his smile was big. "Yeah! And I'm sorry everyone hates you, they must be really stupid or something."
...Wow. This kid was already shaping up to be a pretty decent person. Friend? I would've thought he'd hate me just like the rest after he knew.
Heh...
Maybe he was a friend.
