She ran her hand over its icy neck and kissed it gently. 'No..' she whispered as she again looked at its wing. It let out a sigh and tried to lift its head, being unsuccesful. Only strained breaths were heard as it fought to live. "You.... you did this!! Why?!?"
She glared at Mike and her father as she stood to her feet, staying in front of the dragon as if to guard it from further injury. Mike had a smirk plastered to his face as he beamed with pride over his hit. Trinity lunged towards him with anger in her eyes. She managed to get one good punch in before her father held her back.
He held her from behind with her arms pinned to her side. "Let.. me.. GO!" she yelled, trying to break free. Tears still flowed as she looked back at her dragon, lying still. Mike held his bloody nose and walked to stand by his father. They laughed as he drug Trinity back to the house. "Bastard! Leave me alone!.. I have to get back!" she yelled at him, but it was no use.
He threw her into her room and locked the door from the outside. "There.. stay put while I go make some calls.. I have a good feeling we're about to become rich.." He laughed and hit her door before walking off.
'He's hurt.. maybe worse... and it's all my fault...' She thought as she collapsed to the floor. Trinity pounded at the door as she let out screams and heavy sobs. Her only companion in the world, gone.. at the hands of her brother. She decided then that she had to get out. Maybe it was still alive.
She would never know if she didn't break free. She stood to her feet and carefully leaned against the door to listen for her father. 'Yeah.. I figure it will bring in a pretty penny, being a dragon and all. And ice at that! No, that's taken care of. Ok, see ya then..'
Trinity's father was apparently on the phone, making deals about selling her dragon. She fought back more tears and clenched her fists to her sides. 'He will not sell my friend!' she thought as she searched for something to pick the lock. It wasn't long before a shiny safety-pin caught her attention.
She retrieved the object and began to work. Just as she clicked the lock, her father headed down the hall. Trinity gasped and tried to lock the door again. He was only a couple of feet away now. Her heartbeat pounded in her chest as she awaited her doom.
Then, nothing. The phone rang, causing her father to turn around and away from the door. 'What?!? Gone? Impossible!..' was the sound she heard next. A mixture of confusion and excitement filled her eyes. 'What is he talking about?' she thought as she gently turned the doorknob, peering out into the dark hallway.
Before she stepped out, she reached back to grab something heavy. Her art trophy should work. She had nothing but vengence on her mind. Trinity's eyes were full of anger as she neared the end of the hallway, and stood facing the back of her father.
He was still on the phone. 'Hang on.. I'll be rig--' His words were cut short by the smashing of the trophy on his skull. Trinity smiled, satisfied that he would be unconcious for a while. She wasted no time to head out the door. Her shoes, coat and gloves were left behind, without a second thought.
The cold winter air hit her face like a ton of bricks. Melting snow splashed all around her feet as she quickly ran towards the field. A stray branch caught her foot, causing her to trip and land hard against the uncushioned ground. She quickly recovered and climbed to her feet.
The fall had given Trinity a rather large gash just above her right ankle, but she was unaware at the moment, nor did she care. When she reached the field, she stopped to catch her breath. Her head began to spin as she frantically searched the somewhat, snow-free ground. The spring thaw had oddly came early.
The field was empty. There was no sign of the dragon or anyone else. Just then, Trinity noticed a small pool of water. She walked over to it and knelt down, gazing into its depth. 'No...' she whispered, fearing the worst.
She slowly reached down and skimmed her fingertips over the surface of the water. It was as cold as ice, and clear as the sun's rays. That small pool was all that remained of her beloved Ice Dragon. Destroyed, because of jealousy and rage.
A single tear slid down Trinity's cheek, accompanied by a pained half- smile. She closed her eyes and fell backwards to the ground, staring up at the sky. She let her hand dangle in the water, swirling it around. Her life would never be the same again.
Since that day, the winters have never been as cold; nor the days as bright. Trinity lost her ability to stay in the snow all day without feeling the chill of the air. Her skin darkened slightly and she became a little bit more like the rest of the world.
Her father was sent to jail for abuse and her brother, well, who knows. As for Trinity, she has a great home with a loving family that cares for her and treats her like human. She now has a life.
