Never Enough

You said I’d die like they

I swore to always protect

You soaked in pain and lay

I’m not one to regret

You wrestled demons that time had slayed

I held you close, not seeing your self imposed debt

But no arms you felt as through dreams you did wade

I saw you writhe, our sheets filled with sweat

Years of nights in your mind as your pain was replayed

Me by your side, ever vigilant was your guard as you slept

Just hitting your prime, only I saw you fade

Despite all your ghosts, to my oath I had kept

And in the end it was you you’d flayed

After that night from our bed you had crept

At such an hour away from me you had strayed

You noosed yourself proper before I’d suspect

Hanging in oblivion you’ll stay

This eternity won’t let me forget

Your leash on life had frayed

I had thought your dead posed you no threat

I found you so, your own piper well paid

Your dead eyes caught mine. Cold and direct

And I stared back while the wind made you sway

But no one held me as I fell to me knees and wept.
