Chapter Two

".your grandfather."

Caden was in shock; he thought his grandfather was dead. He gawked at the man claiming to be his grandfather.

When Joseph realized that Caden had no intention on speaking, he began his explanation.

"You see Caden, just a couple of weeks ago; I was in Africa, where I retired. I remembered that your mother had settled down in New York, and thought: I haven't seen my family in a while. Now, here I am!"

Caden just stared at the man, unable to comprehend all of this information. Truth be told, he was mad. How in the hell was he expected to deal with

"My mother left me within weeks after I was born. I guess you left Africa for nothing." Caden made sure to stress the continent's name; he wasn't ready to believe anything this man said.

Joseph frowned. "Well, I apologize for my daughter's actions; but I disagree with you son. This trip wasn't a waste, for I met my only grandson! And what a fine grandson you are."

"You don't even know me. If you did, you'd think differently. Now if you don't mind, I will be on my way. Its getting late and I don't want to be mugged tonight." Caden began walking again.

"Wait."

Caden stopped, and reluctantly turned around, almost in slow motion. He waited.

"If you don't have any other plans, would you like to come back to my apartment? Maybe we could talk."

Caden wondered how in the hell this man managed to find an apartment on such short notice, but shrugged his worry off. "I guess that would be ok; but how do I know you're really my grandfather? I mean.I just met you and all, and as I said, I don't want to be worse."

The elder was taken slightly aback, not expecting such hostility.

"The only tangible proof I have is my ID, and that ironically happens to be in my desk drawer, at home." Joseph gestured to Caden.

Caden sighed in defeat and followed .grandfather.
