Selene hovered between the border of existence and sanity. How long had she roamed lifeless? Her slender figure leaned against the doorframe as she gazed out across the sea; a light breeze ruffled her long silky hair. She had loved someone once. but these things are never meant to last. Love between men and gods is simply not meant to be. She raised her eyes to look up at the moon. She hated the moon, though she was chained to it. and perhaps that was why. The faith of the fallen. Maybe she would find something here that would make her feel human again. No, that couldn't be right. She came here to escape from love. not to find it.

I am falling

Drifting, trapped inside the story
Am chained to the moon
Will the sun take over in the morning?

Nell stepped out onto the veranda and inhaled the sweet scent of the morning. She shielded her eyes from the bright sunlight and looked out over the sparkling blue expanse of water. She loved Paris. It was so beautiful and the beauty was everywhere. She was naïve and beautiful, the type of girl that people fall all over themselves for. Optimistic and cheery, she never knew what to expect and that filled her with an extraordinary zest for life. Being alive was wonderful and she wanted to live her life to the fullest each day.

Filling my lungs with the sky
What can I see from here?
The beauty had nowhere to hide

And nothing to fear

Selene sighed deeply as she moved like liquid along the moonlit path among the trees. The park was beautiful at this time of night. She sat on the brim of the large marble fountain and delicately trailed her fingers through the water. She watched the water droplets fall from her fingertips and frowned. Something was missing. She lifted her sad, empty eyes and watched a young couple stroll along the path hand in hand. The corner of her mouth twitched. They were beautiful. So full of life and love. both of which Selene was lacking.

Nell ran a hand through her short, fluffy hair. She was so elegant, so lovely, and so sad. she was perfect. Nell applied some color to her brush and in turn added the color to the blank canvas in front of her. It was the perfect scene to paint. That woman. it was as if she were part of the moonlight herself. She didn't seem real. Nell was fascinated by her. Her bright eyes flitted between the canvas and Selene. She dared not take her eyes off her for more than a few seconds at time for fear that the moonlight goddess might disappear. She must paint her! Her eyes so haunted and so serene.

Suddenly, Serene became very aware that someone was watching her. She didn't much like being a public spectacle. She turned to see a young woman painting, an artist. She was lovely. So bright eyed, she seemed to glow with the very essence of life itself. The artist looked up and their eyes met. And at that moment it was as if there was nothing else in the world. The girl fumbled and dropped her paintbrush. Even though it was dark Selene could see that she was blushing.

Nell crouched to retrieve the brush. She was blushing like mad and kept her eyes intent upon the canvas. "Do I make an interesting subject then?" A voice like silver floated through the air and landed softly in her ear. Nell turned and stammered "I uh. I just thought the scene was so perfect." She paused nervously, "It's not often that people wander alone here in the park at night." Nell's eyes met Selene's and she was lost. Spiraling into the placid pools of violet and gray. She must find a way to capture those eyes! All the knowledge and the sorrow. "Yes, I suppose you're right." Selene smiled "My name is Selene."

I'm kicking against the tide
That pulls me away from here
The future is nowhere to hide
But something to fear

Nell studied Selene's lips as she spoke and swallowed. She wanted to kiss her. "Selene." she spoke her name like a whisper, caressing it. "That's a beautiful name." The words came out slowly with almost too much meaning. ".I'm Nell." Nell blinked still held transfixed by those gorgeous eyes. Selene laughed like velvet. "Thank you." Nell shook her head slightly to dislodge some of the thoughts that had formed there and began to pack up her supplies. "Leaving so soon?" Selene sounded disappointed. "Would you mind if I walked you home?" She paused for a moment "It's not often that I find someone to talk to." Nell smiled casually, how could she refuse? "Of course!" She was glad to have been able to prolong Selene's presence.

The following night Selene appeared in Nell's bedroom. "You've finished it I see." Her eyes roving over the portrait of the night before. Nell jumped with a start. She had been brushing her at the vanity. "Selene, I didn't hear you come in." Selene smiled "I know." This was not to be the first time Selene appeared in the bedroom. Every night afterward without fail she came to see Nell and they would discuss everything from painting to bridges. Selene grew quite fond of Nell's company.

Selene and Nell walked hand in hand through the park. It was not unusual for friends to do this. They spread out a blanket and lay down staring up into the night sky. "Do you ever wish you could fly? Do you think you could reach Heaven?" Selene doubted the existence of Heaven, after all when you are a god among men, what should you believe in? The two lay silent for quite some time. Then breathed were the words they dare not speak "Selene?" "Mhm?" Nell paused "I love you."

The dream demands the magic is planned
Climb the sky and tell the story
Hand over hand, eyes on the moon
Till the sun takes over in the morning
