Well I stumbled upon such a place, and ever since I left there, I've been wondering, was it real or was it just my imagination, just my thoughts making me think that this place was out of the ordinary?
Well how about this?...You tell me...
It all began on trip my family took this summer, to Colorado. We'd been driving for the longest time, and we were finally coming upon or destination...Gunnison, Colorado.
Who am I you ask? Well I am Diana. The daughter of two loving parents, and two annoying brothers.
Me and my brothers were getting restless, so of course, siblings sitting in a van for five hours are gonna start fighting and bickering, and that's just what happened.
"Diana and Brendon, you two stop fighting before I come back there and make you two behave." Yelled my father at the drivers seat.
I of course fell back in my seat in exasperation, it's not my fault it'd been 5 hours of boring monotonous desert.
But then my little brother Brendon just had to keep picking, kept poking at me till I got mad again.
"Dammit what did I tell you two?" My dad finally yelled.
Brendon finally left me alone.
After what seemed like another hour we finally reached...
"Gunnison, Colorado, Kids." My mother said cheerfully.
"Looks Boring." I said, my older brother John nodding in
agreement.
My dad continued to drive till we finally reached our hotel. We had gone in, and gotten settled. Soon we decided to go out and eat.
We left at around 6:45 in the afternoon, and went driving in the small town. We drove down the streets, several time, and soon it became apparent that, not was all normal in this small town of Gunnison, Colorado.
"Hey does anyone else notice that this place is like empty...Where the heck is everyone?" My brother John said as we drove slowly down the streets.
I looked around me through the windows of the car and noticed that my brother was right. The streets were empty, no one was walking around.
"Hey look Diana, all the stores are closed except for the bars, restaurants and Gas stations." And yet again he was right.
" Hey maybe they are like afraid of the dark or something, or maybe everyone is just freaky, cause what kind of place closes all the stores at 7PM on a Friday, of all days." I said laughingly, then I was struck with another thought. "Hey where are all the teenagers, it's Friday for goodness sake, shouldn't they be going to movies and stuff.
"Hey yeah, she's right, there are NO teenagers here, and no ones out." John said
"Hmmmm.strange but it doesn't matter lets just go find a place to eat" Dad said. By that time my brothers and I were making fun of the place, making creepy stories like how they probably sacrifice the virgin at midnight at the abandoned drive in movie theater that we had driven by.
We were trying to creep out my parents, but it wasn't working they found it funny. Soon we were down to two Chinese food restaurants we had to choose between one with people in it or the one with one couple in it. My mom had decided to investigate but the door into the nearly empty restaurant was around the side in the ally way.
We saw my mother disappear into the ally and for a small moment I believed the stories my brothers and I had made up.
But as soon as I saw my mother I exhaled in genuine relief. She came back to the car and when she got in we told her what we had thought and even she looked a little bit worried, my father found it amusing to no end.
We had decided upon the empty restaurant, so we went in and immediately were seated and given water, our orders soon made and we were left to wait.
I decided to take a drink so I drank from my glass of water. I bugged my eyes slightly at what I tasted. Why I tasted nothing at all.
"John taste your water it's the best water that I've ever tasted, unlike Maryland where the water has a slightly chlorine taste, this tastes like nothing." He reached to drink and was just as surprised as me to find we loved the water.
Soon we told my parents and they too were glad to see that we could finally experience the true taste of water.no taste at all.freaky no?
Soon my imagination got me going again and I leaned toward my older brother and said, "Hey John ever notice how they are always refilling our water but rarely our sodas, and also I never drink the water at restaurants but here I've barely touched my soda but I'm drinking more water then I ever have." He looked thoughtful for a moment and responded,
"Yeah me too, I just don't want my soda but I can't seem to get enough of the water." He stopped talking as the oriental woman came to fill our water glasses again.
After she went away, looked at John and smirked "Hey maybe it's a brain washing water, getting us to drink it so that they can capture us late at night and we will not be able to do fight back." I laughed lightly, just barely believing my own story.
Soon we were served the most amazing amount of food we had ever seen there was enough to feed the whole royal courts of England. After a small while we were filled beyond thought. But still I noticed I had room for yet more water and so was the same for the rest of my family.
I also noticed that after we decided to come to the restaurant more people showed up. But none of them sat near us they all sat around us all at a distance, none near us.
After a short while longer we left the restaurant, I with the most eerie feeling inside.
On our way back to the hotel I looked to the sky to find it torn, the half covering the part of town we had just left was cloud filled and clashed with lighting the side we were going to was cloudless and spilled crescent moonlight. Halfway to the hotel my mother realized that she had left her purse at the restaurant, so we had to head back, my eerie feeling which had started to dissipate quickly returned as we entered the town that now glowed with few lights and still no people.
My mother went and retrieved her purse everything still there, but I wondered why.why had she left it when she's never done that before. Also, why here? In this eerie town?
Finally back in the hotel room, I watched TV, but I didn't really watch it, I was thinking. Wondering as to why I still felt wired, anxious. Soon we laid down for sleep.but it did not come easy for me.
I watched out the window as rain poured in rivulets down the window panes from my cot. Thinking.
"Strange.just so strange." But I didn't finish my thoughts, as they were pierced by a scream. I shot up in bed and looked around no one else awake. I ran to the window, but I saw nothing through the needle point raindrops.
I decided it had just been my, as late over active imagination an went back to my cot.But I couldn't help thinking.could it have been real.? I decided to get up to take one last look, but I never got to, I drifted off into a hazy dream like state I couldn't move.I couldn't really see, everything swirled in my vision, but I could hear, hear a most maniacal, twisted laugh. But I could do nothing.could just do nothing. my mind screaming at me to do something. but sleep consumed me.
I awoke early the next morning, refreshed and ready to face the day. Soon the family had packed up and we were on the road again, heading to Utah.
On the way, we listened to the news on the radio.
"Last night a young woman went missing, there were no witnesses, no noises heard, nothing can be reported for the woman has not been found yet." My dad changed the station.
"How sad, I'm so glad you are safe and sound here with us Diana." My mom said as we hit the state line, the billboard reading "UTAH"
"Yeah mom. I hope she's found." I said in a trance, I had this nagging feeling in my mind and in my heart. But I just couldn't figure it out. But what I do know is that as we left Colorado, I could hear the faint sound of someone laughing, a twisted laugh that I can still hear.and I can only think one thing as I shuddered under waves of the insane laugh.
"Maybe it's something in the water." And we were gone.
The End.
I wrote this a while ago, I hope you all like it, it's my first attempt at like a horror mystery type short story.
