Dream Thoughts*

The smell of shadows clings to my clothes,
Caught up in my hair, shifting with the currents of air.**

I see a movement out of the corner of my eyes,
It's there for a moment; in the dark forest it lies.

Between the lines and around dark corners,
Behind truthful words and in the prayers of others,
In the hearts of the brave and the minds of the wise,
In the years of old age and in the mourner's cries.

Energies surround all those who possess
The understanding of the haunted's unrest.

Rain can soak through more than just clothes and skin.***

My mind and heart pound with the knowledge of sin.

Flames can burn more than just the organic;
The cold makes more than just the living frantic.

A sanctuary is not only a place to hide,
But where my thoughts and dreams tend to reside.

* Dream thoughts, or dream thinking as I call it when I'm explaining, is something I do when I'm awake, well, kinda. It's like daydreaming, but different. Your not asleep, not really awake, not dreaming, yet not thinking either, and it's not daydreaming, but something else. Also something I do is 'mind wandering' when I search the deepest, darkest corners of my mind. I'm very strange, ne?

** This came to me a year ago after I had a dream. I'm not going to explain the whole thing to you, but in the dream, one of the guys says, "It smelled like shadows." That always stayed with me and so I wrote this poem.

*** I was walking home in the rain from school one day, thinking about the "smell of shadows" and this came to me. 'Cuz you know how people say the weather affects their mood and all that.
