Summery: A simple look into a painting, and to show that even angels cannot control whom they fall in love with.
Glimmer and Fade
Prologue
Darque blinked and stared around the field. What had Enzeru been thinking? This wasn’t a safe place for them to meet. Though, they had been doing it for almost an eternity now. When they were but cherubim, Raphael and Gabriel had caught them together, doing the unthinkable. Enzeru had kissed him that night, after which they had been informed that such a sin would not be tolerated again. Darque and Enzeru hadn’t been separated, though. Gabriel had deemed it not necessary and had somehow managed to talk Raphael out of telling on them.
“Come now, Raphael. They are but young ones. They do not understand such things as of yet. Let them off with a warning, okay?” Gabriel had coxed the other Archangel until he had relinquished and nodded in submission. “Run along now, little cherubim. But, do remember what he told you?”
Darque and Enzeru had nodded and departed, but somehow, Darque had not been able to keep Enzeru out of his mind. If all went well, they would join their brethren among the Seraphim. But, if truth rang from Raphael and Gabriel’s warnings, they would be banished from the High Place should their acts be deemed Evil in His eyes. Yet, Darque believed with all his heart that He had created this love he felt for Enzeru. And that if He had created it, then how could it possible be deemed Evil?
“Darque!” Enzeru ran up to him and the two young angels embraced each other. “I am sorry for keeping you waiting. I’m afraid I got…side tracked.”
“Oh?” Darque tilted his head to the side slightly. “By whom?”
Enzeru’s deep amber eyes lit up with joy as he caught his breath and began to explain the reasoning behind his tardiness. The wind blew through the Upper Fields and rustled with their hair, Darque’s a deep brown, barely more auburn than his reddish-brown eyes. Enzeru’s such a pale shade of red that it scarcely looked but white.
“Michael!” He laughed excitedly. Unlike Darque, Enzeru had no idea of the consequences of their meetings. “H-he’s been watching my training sessions and…Oh, Darque, he wants me to join him in battle!”
Darque blinked at the pale angel before him. They were but three thousand years old, scarcely past their cherubim stage. How could Michael wish to take a mere child into battle?
“Michael wants you?” He questioned, gazing into the excited amber before him.
“Yes…” Enzeru’s gaze faltered at the oddly shadowed look in Darque’s eyes. “He told me, just now.” The better part of the joy and excitement left Enzeru’s face as he gazed upon the almost black and white angel before him. “Aren’t you proud of me, Darque? What troubles you, sweet?”
“Nothing!” Darque lied quickly. “I’m utterly delighted for you, Enzeru. I know how you’ve always wished to go into battle with Michael, I just…wish he might have waited a few years…” He trailed off and broke his gaze from Enzeru’s. “I must take my leave now.” He murmured. “Good night, may He keep you strong…”
