Valentines day.I have almost forgot how much I hate it. It is like a
painful memory that never goes away. I wish I hade some one to share my
pain with, but all my friends have gone and left me. The only comfort I get
is from the bottom of a frosting can. My favorite is vanilla. But if only I
could find someone to share this most horrid day with it would be.
"Hey get your head out of the clouds Nick!" A pretty girl in a black
sweatshirt is standing under me. I wish I could kiss her, but I finished
putting up the pink garland I was holding in my hand. The room was
transformed from a boring sterile cafeteria to a boring sterile pink
garlanded cafeteria. I looked around the horribly decorated room looking
proud, but was really thinking, ' What a waste of time and money.' I
noticed there was a person standing next to me, so I walked to the door.
The reflection in the window almost made me run away. It was the girl from
earlier and, from her expression, she looked confused. I wanted to go back
and apologies but I left the cafeteria with her standing there in my mind.
' She's so beautiful' I thought to myself. "Argh!" my mind was against me.
Cheers erupted from the Gym nearby. I snuck in to see that our team
was loosing, but that didn't matter. They had their sweethearts to break
their sour mood. I hate Valentines Day; it just ruins a perfectly good
gaming day. If there was a football game on I'd be there watching it with
the other losers. Since I told my mother that I was staying over at my
friend's house I could stay for the entire thing. That meant the clean up
too, and that ended at around 1o'clock AM. "Quaker!" I jumped when Coach
saw me and began to plan my will, for I thought it was the principal. I
turned around to face a big man, I mean BIG! Coach was always like that so
after a while you learn to love him, not literally of course. "Why aren't
you out there playing," he was furious and his double chin bounced angrily.
I stifled a laugh as I explained how student government came first. He
nodded and gave me a well-padded slap on the shoulder, " Well, the
cafeteria better look good." He turned to walk away when he heard the
referee's whistle, " And Nick, you better not miss practice on Monday cause
we're going to have some real fun," He waddled off to challenge the Referee
again, and not the last either.
My eyes rolled reflexively and I decided to look for more pathetic
decorations for the dance. I saw the girl again struggling with a tall
ladder and decided to help her. She looked helpless as she struggled to get
the big ladder through the door. I smiled broadly then quickly looked
around to see if anyone saw me. She managed to get it though and set it up
hastily, and climbed up it with silver dangly table drops for the entrance
and began to tape it up. I inched closer to see if the ladder was going to
fall. The ladder shuddered and the girl kept on taping up the drop. I stood
near the ladder and just out of sight. The ladder buckled and the girl
screamed and fell towards the hard linoleum. I reached out and caught her
in my arms, her eyes were closed so I looked behind me to see where the
ladder was and saw that I couldn't dodge if I had wanted to. I turned back
around to se one eye was open and she let out a silent cry when hit my
back. It didn't hurt but she was impressed, though I did feel something
watery down my neck. 'Good,' I thought, ' she's impressed.' She looked at
me with Aw.
" Thanks Nick," she sounded relieved, I figured that being crushed by
a ladder wasn't her idea for fun. " .no problem" I set her down and
itched the back of my neck to see if it was bleeding, I looked down at her.
She was shaking so I hugged her and let her body rest against mine. She
stopped shaking and smiled at me, I felt my heart pounding and my face
redden. She stood on her toes and caressed my cheek with her lips. "Uh."
was the only thing that I could say. " Would you be my valentine Kali?" I
managed to say after some time. Kali looked up at me in shock, I thought I
had done something wrong. She smiled," on one condition." I looked at her
confused. I really loved her and asked what it was. " .That you get nothing
for me on valentines day." "Why?" Her answer puzzled me. I thought that all
girls liked to get gifts on this overly commercialized holiday. " Because
supporting the card industry isn't what this holiday is all about, and
besides I'd rather be with you." Our hands found each other and I found
myself smiling, " Okay, but only if you don't get anything for me." We
finished decorating the sterile cafeteria in what were the best decorations
for it ever. And you know what, I still hate Valentines Day, but now I've
found someone to hate it with.
