The Lovers’ Tragedy

Rays of light shine upon the face

Of a young woman lithe as Grace

Her cherry red cheeks streaked with tears

Her round blue eyes bereft of fears

She held onto her shining knight

Crying in her clothes of white

Sad was she a sight to see

Made to weep in misery

War came on and peace left off

Fights were won and some were lost

Lives were finished with the thrust of a sword

Fell soldiers buried without reward

Youth was wasted on battlefields

Death was common and would not yield

Young women and old lamented together

Praying for their husbands and brothers

The blood red sun shone once again

Upon the land of war and ruin

The heady stench of men long dead

Filled the air with news of dread

The young lady sat without her knight

Under the lonely stars, contrite

Longing for the day they’d find each other

In the heavens forevermore lovers.
