They stood, silent and scared, on the immense cliff. The water, a deep, pale blue, looked so calm from the shore, but from atop the tall rock, the waves crashed back and forth, awaiting a body to claim as its next unhappy victim.

A single cloudy tear dropped from one of her piercing green eyes, falling the entire distance down to the watery abyss. She looked right through him. She couldn't see him right now, didn't want to see the one who was slowly breaking her fragile heart.

"Liz?" he hoarsely whispered, as if any sound at all could crumble their entire world like a cookie in spoilt milk. "I am sorry, Liz. I love you, and always will. Please! Just go back to the hospital, for me?" He reached out for her pale hand.

She moved away; her arms folded lightly over her chest.

"Liz! I can't do this without you! I need you there!" He fell to his knees, in pain and in heartbreak. "Lizzy, please! Don't be mad. Nothing bad is going to happen, as long as you're there with me!" He pounded his fist on the hard bedrock.

Still, she replied with silence, her piercing eyes still staring into the icy blue abyss. He stood, dejectedly, and said, "I have to leave now, Lizzy. Remember I love you. I'll see you soon, I hope." He turned to leave, turning back only once, then continuing into the haze.

A moment later, the beautiful young girl looked up. "I love you, Aaron. I just can't be there right now. I can't stand to live without you. I won't live without you!" she whispered to the stormy, grey sky. The tears began to flow freely. "I won't live without you!" she repeated as the clouds burst open and she collapsed on the cliff, tears flowing with the intensity of the thunderous storm.

Aaron walked through the front doors of the large white building, then disappeared. On the fourth floor, the medical staff had gone into mass chaos.

"Code Blue!" yelled a nurse from behind the desk. "Aaron Micheals, flat lining! Doctor, Hurry!"

People were rushing all around. They attempted to shock his heart back, but it only jumped once, then ran flat once again.

There was no hope–It was too late for the seventeen-year-old heart patient. His already pale face grew to an icy blue with a temperature to match as the doctor declared his time of death.

The young girl stood formally by the doors of the funeral home, as if waiting for someone to arrive. She found it intriguing to listen to Aaron's family and friends talk about the wonderful young man.

A friend from school was saying, "He hadn't been out of the hospital for months. Not even out of the bed."

A family member, who happened to be at the hospital that day was saying, "His surgery was just a few hours away. If only he had held on for those few hours, they could've saved him."

Another woman was saying, "He gave up hope. He knew they couldn't do anything to save him. He didn't want to hope."

But she knew. He had made her promise that if she loved him, she'd be there with him before his surgery that day. He had died of a broken heart.

She felt arms hugging her from behind. She smiled sweetly as she turned to look at the love of her life. "Aaron . . . " she whispered.

"Sh . . . " he replied before capturing her lips in a passionate kiss. They suddenly broke loose as the sky brightened.

"I was there, Aaron. You didn't see me, but I was there," she whispered, the people still flowing around them.

"I know, Elizabeth, I did see you. Let's go home." He took her hand in his and they disappeared, leaving all the people down there to speculate about their lives.
