I woke up late that Monday morning
I thought of eating, but that was getting kind of old.
Just like everything else- TV, the radio, paint guns, basketball.
But when eating is boring, life has come to something
a dead end, to use a cliche.
I thought of school.
It was the last day
the last chance to see my friends and do all the normal things I usually liked.
We wouldn't have any work.
Through the first three classes we would eat junk food and talk.
We'd do everything we've ever wanted to do but had never been allowed to
just because this was supposed to be a civilized country
and we were expected to pretend like we were civilized.
That was for sure the stupidest thing I'd ever learned in school.
One day, when we sit in class-
Spanish class, even though nobody in this school has a chance of going off to some foreign country-
one day, while we sit and scribble in page after page of our tattered workbooks-
torn up and illegible after just one year-
suddenly, while we were doing that, just sitting and thinking all in that one classroom
the world will sprout wings and fly away.
And then what?
We'd have been too busy being civilized
to do something that would last after the world fluttered away.
And we'd be grounded on an Earth that isn't there
just like we'd always been.
