Shriveling Seed

In all my years of living I've had just one dream,
and its fulfillment would let me die in peace:
To leave a legacy beyond my reach;
to plant one seed in the garden of the earth.
An inch taller than the rest,
a shade brighter than the best,
if only in one square inch.
I await an opportune moment,
when winter recedes and spring warms the soil,
when the skies pour sweet raindrops on my seed.
I wait... I procrastinate,
and winter comes again.
