My Kin

You swim in schools in the reef all day,
always in the sun's tropical rays.
No wonder your scales are radiant.

You see right through my transparent scales
but you've never seen the dark of the abyss
and you don't understand at all.

I don't belong with you who taunt me
for my solitary nature and
garishly large eyes.

My kin are those who know the darkness,
those who have wandered through it alone
while being crushed by pressure from above
and scalded by hydrothermal vents below.

Curiosity brought them to the anglerfish's lure
where our impossible encounter occured.
We'll swim up together into the light, to face you
and find everlasting joy.
