The Survivors
Safia and Nyte walked out of the palace, and into the garden, now somewhat welded together by what they had just experienced. Both of their heads were full of the future and the dazzling present. They should have been sad that they had to leave the North, but both craved the sense of adventure that only came with travelling, and both were too disturbed, albeit in different ways, by the deaths that had happened tonight. They were silent all the way back to Safia's house, where Rugo happily helped his sister to pack her things.

Placio Rupe rubbed his head and looked around him at all of the carnage. A dead Queen, a dead King, a dead Vilma Asyn. What had happened here? He got up and waddled around a bit, clutching the thallium around his neck for support. What was he going to do? He walked to the door and found it unlocked. Where had the sprite gone? He reached into his pocket and found no key, Vilma must've taken it. But Safia was still the only one not here, but she wouldn't have killed all those people, would she?
He didn't have time to think long, however, because another guard at the castle: Dill, the gnome who had been with him when Nyte had died, blundered into the room and looked around flustered.
"What happened."
"I don't know," Rupe admitted.
Delirious, Dill stumbled around the room, looking at all of the dead. Had Rupe done this?
"Call me crazy," Rupe muttered, "but I think the prince -"
"Nyte Shya? He's dead!"
"And so are you," a pynule jumped from behind them and smiled a cold, sharp smile. "And as the killer of the king, and as he has no heirs, I am now King!"
"But we can't have a pynule for a king," boomed the not so intelligent Dill, "you're an animal!"
"Yes," sneered the pynule, "I am, and I'm going to be the animal that kills you!"
He leapt into the air for Dill's neck, his thorny claws outstretched. Rupe turned to the door and ran, he ran for as long as he could and he never, ever turned back.
Mindric smiled as Dill died. He was King now, and he seriously doubted the gnome who had run away would ever come back to North East Quynx unless he had a death wish. He also doubted that if the gnome did come back, he would be able to do anything about Mindric. The key in Mindric's stomach sat inside him, he should've been dead.

Nyte: "I'm wondering," Safia asked me as I watched her and Rugo packing, "Why you died when you were stabbed if you had thallium inside you."
I shrugged, although I despised admitting it, I had no idea. I bet Safia knew more about me than I did.
"Well," Safia said patiently, "I was thinking that maybe it was because of the blood."
"The Blood?"
"Yeah, I mean when you were a baby you were stabbed and lost a lot of blood, but you weren't actually dead when your uncle operated. When you were stabbed later, you lost too much blood, your body couldn't repair in time, thallium isn't indestructible, is it? You were just too dead."
Rugo nodded in agreement. "That's what I was thinking too."
"And again, um ," Safia was packing a disgusting pair of pink fluffy gloves. They were hideous, I felt a surge of dislike for her. "Um, the stabbing when you were little, that would be why you're so squeamish."
I hated to admit it, but she was probably right. I felt dislike for her because of that too. I still hated people very easily, things like that just can't be reversed, only with Safia it was amazing, I only disliked her.
Rugo looked at me as if he was very confused about something. Yep I still hated him alright.
"So you're coming to the South now?"
"South West Quynx, might as well make it the whole world," I sneered sarcastically. "Yeah I'm coming to your precious South West, and your guys better have their thallium unless they want to end up like my parents." I did a good choking impression of a dead person and chuckled a little bit. Apparently Safia and Rugo didn't find it so amusing.
"I'll ring them," said Rugo urgently.
"Are you sure you want to leave, Nyte? You should be king, you're heir to the throne!"
I'd have loved to be king. All that power, all that authority, all those lives in my hands. I smiled at the thought. I must admit I am slightly power-happy.
"Dead princes can't rule a country," I told Safia wisely.
Safia sighed and packed some huge frilly knickers. Once more I strongly disliked her, but still, it wasn't hate, was it.
