Spotlight

It’s almost time

For the curtain to rise

Behind it

The stage is set

And the audience waits for its show

They are restless

I can hear them

And along with my fellow cast members—

Hidden in the wings—

I feel the adrenalin rush

My heart beats faster

And butterflies hold a decathlon in my gut

Slowly I’m able to calm my nerves

This is where I belong

It’s what I came here to do

And I’ll meet it the way I should

The butterflies die

Or quickly take flight

And dart among the lights far above

I hear the music begin

And I feel the joy of performance swell

Slowly, the curtain rises

And the lights are all dim

Save one.

The spotlight’s on me

I slowly step forward

And look into the theater

But it’s empty

All except for the AV guy
