Fixed Bodies

Along the salty shore of sea
Two pairs of feet tread foam.
They lived together he and she
Unchained by Time they wandered free
Always they were alone.

Companions, lovers, children pure
Caught between the fated.
What mortal souls could such endure:
The start and end and void of worlds
As they grew they faded. . .

At first the veins beneath their skin
Wrapped around the marrow
Exposed the teeming life within
Of tiny cells which whirled and spinned
Touched them with first sorrow.

But soon their frames revealed the land
The world became their coats
They watched the insects through their hands
Their feet o'er shadowed with the sands
And wine whirl down their throats

At last they knew their ends were near
Against the landscape only smears
They clasped each other and they peered
For vestiges of eyes and ears
And then they kissed and disappeared
