~2 days later~
I was sitting on a bench in the back court, staring at the scorch mark
on the stone courtyard. For some reason, a piece of an old tune was dancing
about in my head, so I sang along softly under my breath.
'.Forbidden blood/forsaken name/divine right, thy name is the
draken/Tears of fire/song of light/gliding on wings of the falcon."
"You've changed."
I stopped humming, glanced up at Acuzzy and smiled. "Changed? Come sit
and tell me how so." I patted the spot on the bench next to me.
He sat next to me and replied, "You'.you've become more
independent. You're also more active, less hesitant; I remember the happy
lil' boy you used to be, afore your father was killed; when he died, t'was
like you died with 'im. But then you met Mier, an it's like you suddenly
remembered how to be like that little boy again."
He fell silent, and I thought he had finished his little speech. But
then he went on, saying, "I missed that boy. An' now that Mier ain't got
nothin to do now, she might go back to wanderin', an' truth be told, I
don't want her to. Cuz if she leaves, you might go back to the shy, scared
kid that you was afore, an I don't want that." He finished and,
surprisingly enough, reddened.
The smile had faded from my face as he spoke. He was right. I had
never realized it, but he had. I discovered at that moment that I too
missed that carefree little boy. I attempted a grin.
"Well, how do you know Mier." My throat seized up. I didn't want her
to leave, either. She had become a friend. "How do you know she's going to
go wandering off? Did she say?"
He slowly shook his head. "No.. she hasn't. I jus' assumed that she
would, being as she is a wanderer an' all."
"Well, ask her if she is going to leave before you assume. Go on," I
flapped my hands at him. "Ask her."
Thankfully, he nodded and left. I waited until he was out of my sight
before I sighed, flopping my head down into my hands. He had given me some
interesting things to think about, and including the things I already had
on my mind, that was a lot.
My companions. Mier, the sister I still didn't fully know and who
might leave; Acuzzy, who occasionally appeared to fear me and noticed
everything that I didn't; Phez, the one who kept to herself even more than
I did.
My enemies. The family and friends of the one I had killed; the ones
who would feel that I would not be a good leader; others who I knew nothing
of.
Me. I doubted my ability to be a leader; I feared my powers; I felt
that my friends were mysteries.
My friends! With a shock, I realized that I would have to come up
with jobs for them. Things to do. Otherwise..
Stop that, I told myself, shaking my head. I'll deal with these things
as they come. And with the help of my friends, I'll do just fine.
I was rubbing my right wrist with my thumb. Glancing down, I moved my
finger and saw the emblem that was magically burned on my wrist. Thief..
mark of the King of Courts. Even with the help of my friends, I would have
an interesting first few weeks.
I heard running steps and looked up. Phez came towards me, face
alight, saying that Mier was staying and that the others were wondering
where I was, because they were having a little get-together. I could smell
her anticipation; she was hoping for a wager or five.
Grabbing my arm, she relentlessly tugged me towards the inn. With a
last glance at the scorch mark, I stood up and allowed myself to be pulled
along. Yes, from now on, it would be most interesting. Most interesting
indeed.
