Why is freedom so painful
it is the blood of a man seeping
into the sand at night
the tears that run down a child's cheek
during the national anthem
Freedom is red white and blue
melting into shades of orange, yellow, and red
the heat fusing democracy and republicans
Power hungry watch dogs snooping through the mail
sniffing our the shitty diapers and
long rotten apple peels of the nation
calling the smell freedom and the
shit in their teeth duty
Whipping the nation into shape with
green brown black; left right left
up to the noose of the Middle East
Marching into a death trap of car bombs
and suicide bombings, rebel shootouts
and hidden mines, caves dug in the earth
labyrinths underneath sand dunes
under our noses
Hiding the oil fields that glow with
green from our pockets and
and red from the bodies that fell
Painful freedom or numb slavery
whatever the criminal wants to call it
when everything feels the same
after such a dark night
Send off our husbands and brothers
our daughters and mothers and babies
to blindly destroy today's enemy
Because freedom is only something that we can enjoy
