"But,"
she said to him.
"You have to see.
He is the full moon,
and I am the sea.
Though I reach for your shores,
he has his claim on me.
Pause.
"Yes,"
he said to her.
"That I will understand—
he is the moon. But you are the sun—
brilliant until he raises his hand.
So I ask you, sea and sun,
After his shadow passes,
will you still wash
will you still shine
on my sand?"
