It was just another day at Patton High School. In one of the classrooms, a girl notices that the kid beside her is missing. But he has never missed a single day of school; he even comes when he is sick. The teacher was taking attendance and calls out his name. "Has anyone seen Mr. Malone today?" she asks.

None of the students answer aloud. Trevor was a loner; not one of the students talks to him. The only time anyone says anything to him is if he is assigned to their group. Then they talk about him and tease him. He was known to burst out in anger occasionally. But nobody even suspected him to do anything; he is just too weak, not able to defend even himself.

Still everything seemed normal, that is, until lunchtime. The students would usually eat outside on a nice day, but today the doors wouldn't open. So the students sat down in various places: some in the classrooms, some in the hall, and some in the gymnasium. Students that waited for the school lunch noticed the smoke first. It seemed to be coming from the kitchen. As they looked around they saw more smoke coming in the cafeteria doors. Some students ran to the outside doors but they couldn't open them. Teachers pushed their way to the outside doors. They couldn't open them either. The doors seemed to be barricaded. It seemed they were trapped. The smoke began to get thicker and darker. No one could see more than a few feet in front of them. Flames could be seen close to the boiler room. A few students noticed it too late. The flames reached the boiler room; then an explosion blew several students off their feet.

Being on the edge of a small town, the fire department didn't reach the school on time. By the time they arrived, the building was fully engulfed. All chances of anyone surviving were gone. Everyone in the school, all students and faculty died. Most of the bodies were recovered, but twenty were not found.
