Attractive Opposites By: Izzy-chan
(At a CVS)
Gabe Brighton sighed as he checked out customer's items. He had just gotten a job at CVS and found that it was the same old thing, every day. His only distraction, and sometimes amusement, would be found in his co- worker Maria. Maria was dating his brother and they all got along relatively well. Only she wasn't working today, so it was a bit boring all by himself.
A new customer approached the checkout. This one, Gabe recognized from school. He was hard to miss. Tall, with long black hair, dark eyes, black, baggy clothing, piercings in his ears, a ring pierced on the center of his lower lip, and chains hanging off his pants, despite the dress strict code rules that banned them. His name was Dillon. Gabe had never talked to the other student before, but had heard whispered rumors about him. He was kind of scary.
Dillon was carrying bags of Reese's peanut butter cups to the counter. He recognized the cashier vaguely. He was medium height with blond shaggyish hair, big blue eyes, and Abercrombie and Fitch clothing. He looked like he could have been a poster boy for any preppy clothing store. Looking at the employee's nametag, he knew the other boy was named Gabe. He placed his candy on the counter.
Dillon could practically feel the other boy's distaste for him, and it was annoying. That was one thing Dillon hated more than anything. Preppy little punks that judged everyone just because they didn't fit into the idea of 'normal.' Dillon's catchphrase was fuck normality. He did whatever he felt like, it didn't matter what anyone else thought. People's disapproval and approval did not matter to him.
"Is that all for today?" Gabe tried to cheerfully speak his required line, but he knew that his voice came out tense.
"What do you think?" Dillon raised a brow.
Gabe gave him a serious look. "I have to say that," he answered stiffly.
"Okay, Abercrombie. Ring me up." His eyes never left Gabe's face.
Gabe moved slowly and carefully as he swiped the items. "That's ten dollars and seventy five cents." He tried not to be offended by the name the other boy called him. Instead, he marveled on how much Dillon must love Reese's peanut butter cups.
Dillon dug in his wallet for his money, and handed it to Gabe. Their fingers brushed. Dillon almost flinched at the warmth of Gabe's hands. Dillon's hands were always freezing. Just that brief touch made Dillon want to grab Gabe's hands and use them as his personal heater. He frowned at the strange thought before shoving it in the back of his mind.
Gabe's eyes widened slightly at the contact. Dillon's hands were so cold! It was as if his hands matched his personality. Smooth and cold. He then realized Dillon was staring at him. Gabe was still holding the money in his hand. He pretended not to be flustered as he opened the cash drawer and put the money away. Ripping off the receipt, he shoved it in the bag and handed it to Dillon.
"Have a nice day."
"I will," was Dillon's only reply.
Gabe was overjoyed when his shift ended. It seemed as if it lasted forever. He cheerfully drove home. His brother Dan, Maria, and his best- friend Justin were sitting in the living room watching some dumb movie. Justin wasn't really paying attention, sketching in his drawing pad.
Gabe had known Justin for as long as he lived. They were next door neighbors since they were born. Their parents were friends, and they immediately became best-friends. Justin was different than anyone Gabe had ever known. Two years ago, when they were sixteen, Justin came out to him only.
Gabe remembered Justin saying, "I'm not attracted to you or anything like that. But I love you like a brother, and I thought you should know."
After the revelation, Gabe had went to his room to think about it. He came to the conclusion that knowing didn't make Justin any different than the day before. He was the same person, and they were like brothers. If anything, the admission had caused them to become closer than ever. Justin was a good kid. A little quiet and shy, but genuinely nice and conscientious of other people's feelings. He was an incredible artist. He could draw, paint, sculpt, anything from people to still life, to abstract.
He was not an unattractive person, kind of short, light brown hair, green eyes, beaming white smile, and light freckles. He looked almost childishly cute. They were in the same circle of friends at school and everyone liked him. Gabe didn't think that anyone could ever hate Justin.
Gabe sat on the couch next to him and looked at what he was sketching. It was a series of drawings, all of Dan and Maria. They were incredible. The positions were naturally beautiful and the emotion, you could tell just from looking how much Dan and Maria cared for each other.
"Wow, that's really good," Gabe complimented.
Justin blushed. "Oh, this is just doodling. It's not really serious artwork."
Maria leaned over to see what they were talking about. "Oh my God! I want that picture! I mean, if you'll let me have it."
"If you really want it, you can have it." Justin ripped the page out of his sketchbook.
The four chatted about their days until Mrs. Brighton came in and told them that it was time to eat dinner.
(Meanwhile)
Dillon drove to the 'office' after his stop at CVS. He and his friend Adam rented out a small office building downtown. It was just a place for them to hang out. It had a mini-fridge, a tv, a big ass CD player, a computer, and Dillon's guitar.
Adam was already there, lounging on the couch in front of the tv. "Hey," he greeted, shoving popcorn in his mouth.
Adam was an interesting guy. He went to state semi-finals for wrestling but was considered unpopular by almost all of his classmates. Adam was born with only his right hand. His left, ended at his wrist. Guys considered him uncool, and girls were disgusted by his non-hand, even though he was attractive. He was built and trim, having tons of muscles from working out and wresting. He had short-cut dark brown hair and large brown eyes. His lips were thin and unsmiling most of the time, bitter almost, maybe because of the way others treated him.
Adam liked Dillon because Dillon treated everyone the same. In other words, Dillon hated everyone. Well, he wouldn't say 'hate' that's a little strong, perhaps it would be better to say that Dillon was anti-social.
Dillon flopped beside Adam on the couch, opening a bag of Reese's pieces. "You know a lot of the preps right?"
Adam nodded. Since he was involved in sports, he interacted with them occasionally.
"Does one named Gabe go to our school?" Dillon was pretty sure he recognized Gabe from school, but wanted to know for sure or else it would bother him.
"Yeah," Adam turned to him. "Why?"
Dillon shrugged, "When I was picking these up, I thought I recognized the cashier from school. Just curious."
"I haven't talked to him much but he's pretty.decent for a prep." Adam volunteered the information without being asked for it.
The two sat in silence for the rest of the time, only to comment on the tv shows they watched together.
(Next Day)
Gabe and Justin walked down the hall, headed for their first period class, English. Justin mentioned how he was in need of a model for an art project when Gabe spotted Dillon in the crowd. He was with the wrestler Adam Smith. Gabe sort of knew Adam, but didn't really have an opinion on the guy. Dillon's eyes met his.
"Hey Abercrombie," he muttered as he passed by.
Gabe frowned at that greeting.
Justin noticed the exchange. "What was that about?"
"I dunno. I just saw him at CVS yesterday. He bought a ton of Reese's Pieces."
"Ya' know, I think he and Adam are really hot," Justin whispered, blushing a deep red color.
Gabe was surprised at this. Yes, Justin came out to him, but he never openly discussed whoever he thought was attractive. "Well, I think that Dillon's a jerk. I don't really know Adam though."
Justin continued to blush, smiling slightly. He was glad that his friend was so accepting about his sexuality. He remembered how nervous he was, telling Gabe the truth, but in the end, he was glad he did. Gabe was the best friend, and brother anyone could ever have.
(Lunch time)
Justin sat beneath his favorite tree, just sketching. His spot was secret, behind the school, unnoticed by anyone. It was a beautiful spring day. Leaning back, he relaxed, basking in the sun. He liked to be out here, alone. Sometimes he needed a break from his friends, their loudness, and talk of girls. It was pleasant to just sit, and listen to everything around.
Movement caught his eye. Adam Smith was walking around back there, a cigarette in hand. Justin watched him exhale and sigh. He looked as if he was having a bad day.
"Ya' know, if you get caught smoking here, you could get in trouble," Justin commented, making his presence known.
Adam almost jumped when he heard Justin's voice, but didn't let it show that it startled him. He examined Justin with an indifferent expression. He had seen Justin around school and knew who he was, but had never talked to him, or heard him speak. The sunlight shone from behind the tree, making the highlights in Justin's hair gleam. He was smiling up at him, almost endearingly.
"I don't care," was Adam's blunt reply. He leaned against the tree Justin was sitting under.
Justin tilted his head up to look at him.
"That's a nice picture," Adam gestured towards Justin's sketch.
"Thanks," Justin blushed slightly at the praise.
It was another picture of Dan and Maria. Maria had asked him to do a special one for her. Justin liked to draw the two together anyway.
Adam examined Justin, as he sat across from him. "Are ya' good enough to draw me right now?"
"Yes, I could." Justin said, turning the page of his sketchbook. "Would you like me to?"
Adam shrugged, nonchalantly. "I don't care."
"Okay then." Justin began to sketch. Drawing a person was always such an intimate experience. Drawing a person's exact features, the curve of a cheekbone, or pout of lips, felt as if he were in fact touching them. Adam was sharply featured. He had an almost harsh facial appearance. He looked angry today. Frowning slightly, mouth tight, as if all his troubles were weighing upon him, crushing him.
Adam watched Justin sketch. He took an occasional drag from his cigarette when Justin wasn't looking at him. Justin's eye lashes looked so long when he was looking down at the paper. It made him appear almost feminine. He let his mind drift away, relaxing from his worries, lying in the grass.
(Gabe and Dillon)
Gabe was looking for Justin when he ran into Dillon. "Sorry," he muttered.
"Hey, Abercrombie, you seen Adam?"
Gabe scowled. "Don't call me that."
"But it's the truth ain't it?" Gabe smiled. "I didn't mean it insulting."
"Sure you didn't." Gabe rolled his eyes. He really didn't want to deal with this now. He wanted to hang out with Justin, and his soothing presence. He moved to walk away.
Dillon followed him. "Ya' know, if it makes ya' feel better, you can call me a freak or something, 'cause I don't think I'm gonna stop calling ya' abercrombie." He knew he was baiting Gabe, but it was funny to see him get all angry.
Gabe stopped. "Leave me alone." He quickened his pace to the back of the school. He knew Justin would be there, and, unfortunately, he knew that Dillon was following him. When he came over the hill, he could see Justin against his tree, with Adam. That was a surprise. Adam was looking at something Justin drew and smiling.woah, Gabe had never, ever, seen Adam smile. Justin was laughing. They looked happy. That was interesting.
