Row Upon Row

Row upon row of glistening stones,
Sun apologising for the departed rain.
Peaceful the sky, well-cut the grass,
Maintained for all the men who died.
Row upon row of resting men,
Exhausted beyond natural sleep and retired
Until the morning bell rings aloud,
Oh God, there must be a reason why so many died.
Row upon row of nameless graves,
Unidentified, mutilated, tattered and maimed.
How peaceful a place for so many unnamed.
Oh God, tell me the reason why so many died.
