            Shuuru (surrealism)

A little wooden table

In the centre of the trees

The Boys running, skipping, laughing;

I watch with a mother’s eyes

Peter sits apart, watching

The mainland upon his knees

A long moment later, he rises

He sits beside me

A true pirate captain, he demands

We hold on

Hold on? Why?

Peter’s arm around my waist

Holding me tightly against him

The Boys exchange nervous glances

Still air, still night

Even the stars have frozen

The world – our world, our Neverland – begins to tip forward

Hanging upside down

And people fall

Like rain from the sky

Quietly screaming; their voices are lost

            A moving, vibrant river below

            Red and orange and yellow

            Seizing the falling

Peter’s eyes are closed

He does not see what I see

But he holds me firmly

I do love him

Ai no Peter Pan[1]

Slightly’s knuckle’s are white

Curly’s face is red

The twins stare at one another

We cannot save those now dead

Tootles is crying hard now

And Nibs has bitten through his lip

I can see them

Reaching for me

But the world has rightened

And all is too too quiet

A thimble for Peter

Because I want him to forget

A thimble from Peter

Because he wants me to forget too

Hito wa kanashii mono2

“I’m glad of you.”

We say it all together

The Boys, Peter, and I

Taisetsu na boku no takaramono yo3

Giddy Relief

Childish selfishness; at least we’re alright.

Taisetsu na boku no takararamono yo4

Peter is distant; his eyes are wide and vague

Hugging myself and I find I stand in front of the Gates

Just where Peter knelt minutes before

Pearly translucent shapes drifting toward me

A man in a Cat-in-the-Hat hat

His grin terrifies me

Thousands of shapes, floating, reaching, above the dead mainland

Shoved aside, I hit the floor

The hard-packed cold dirt

The Gatekeeper leaps before the Gates

A lantern in one hand, a key in the other

He slams the Gates shut

They are locked

Icy, solid, patternless, rising far above me

“You knew,” I accused of Peter.

He nodded

How could he have remembered?

Doko ni mo nai basho de5

It grows dark

            Basho de6

I cannot see Peter

Kimi wa doko e itta no ka?7

I cry out for him

Kimi wa doko ni iru no?8

            Basho de9

The Neverland is lost to shadow

            Basho10

Its gates are forever shut

Doko ni mo nai basho de

Watashi wa watashi no mama de tatte’ru11
