That Fateful Day

When I saw the pale, stricken face of my teacher

And heard the horrible news,

I knew that this was no joke,

Nor a nightmare I’d wake up from.

It’s true,

It’s real,

The Twin Towers had crumbled.

My father could’ve been there,

Jumping out the window.

My mother could’ve been there,

Another one under the rubble and ash.

Those thousands who had died that day,

What mistakes had they made?

If it happened two years before,

I would’ve been among the panicking people.

The building I once called home,

Now lay bare,

With only ruins to prove its former existence.

People say there’s a divine force,

Judging right and wrong.

They say that he would right the wrongs,

And save the innocent.

Where was He

When widows wept by headstones

And orphans cried for Mom?

Where was He

When hearts were shattered,

And oceans of tears were shed?

The hanging gardens of Babylon…

The ancient temple of Solomon…

Both were once majestic,

But each had its own demise.

The Twin Towers just became another one,

Its glory ephemeral…

Leaving nothing but debris and ash.
