Jeweled Mask

Always sparkling,
Never dim,
Flawless gold,
Shining gems.

I wear an ornate mask,
Behind it I hide.
The weight of metal against my face,
The cold touch of an artificial facade.

Like an actor in a play,
Reciting the rehearsed lines,
I fool the audience,
They believe in this pretend world.

The mask becomes heavy,
A terrible burden.
Cloying heat and shortened breath,
The mask is slowly suffocating me.

I cannot remember my own face,
I've lost it behind the glittering jewels.
Does anyone remember the real me?
Does anyone care that I'm gone?

Finally, I pry the mask off,
Ready to face the world as myself.
The room is empty,
No one's there to see me.

Was it like this all along?
Was I trying to hide from myself?
The cool metal drops from my hands, clattering to the floor,
In front of me I see a door, the door to my freedom.
