Even the Sky Cries
Chapter 1
She sat, perched in the rafters, watching the shadows stir beneath
her. Keeping her breathing steady, Aimee tried to listen to the
conversation that was going on below. However, the voices were much too
quiet and she was up too high to hear them.
She sat without moving for what seemed like hours, when, in fact, it
was only one. While she was sitting in the rafters, the voice below grew
annoyed with one of their own. The shadows began to stir restlessly on the
floor below.
Soon, shouts broke out and a struggle began between the members of the
floor. One voice seemed to carry over the rest, but the words could still
not be made out from her location.
Suddenly, light filled the room, revealing her presence. The shouts
grew and she began to spring through the rafters. Dodging various objects
that the ones below were throwing in order to knock her down, she made her
way to the exit.
The girl leapt down to the floor and made her way to the door, which
was protected by three guards. Moving quickly, Aimee sidestepped to dodge
a blow from a sword of one of the guards. She immediately ducked to avoid
a blow from a staff from one of the others.
Spinning in the opposite direction, Aimee kicked one of her foes
across the jaw. Leaping backwards, she evaded the sword. As she sprang to
the left, Aimee slammed her fist into the face of her pursuer with a staff.
However the guard anticipated this move and managed to throw her off
balance before he fell to the floor, nose bleeding. The other took
advantage of this and came at her, sword flailing.
Knowing that she could not dodge in time, Aimee stepped to her right
and shielded herself with her arms. She was hit three times before she
could regain her balance: once on her left arm, once just under her right
wrist, and one small little cut on her right cheek.
Before more damage could be done, the girl managed to get through the
door. Hardly anyone realized that she was through until she was three-
fourths down the corridor. They shouted at her and began to chase her, but
she had already turned right and was sprinting down that hallway.
Darting down a few more hallways, Aimee smiled when she found what she
was looking for. A giant glass window loomed over her as she stopped at
the end of a corridor.
Taking a deep breath, Aimee shielded her face and jumped through the
glass, shattering it. She landed easily and ran forward and somewhat to
the right, aiming for a small cluster of trees. Once she had made it,
Aimee began running in pointless zigzags in an attempt to prevent anyone
from following her.
After running for what seemed to be a century, but was actually
fifteen minutes, the trees cleared and in front of her was a wall that
looked to be at least ten feet high.
Without pausing to take a breath, Aimee began to scale the wooden
structure. As she approached the top, a small group of guards emerged to
her left and began firing arrows at her. On her way over the top, Aimee's
shoulder was pierced with an arrow, but she managed to dodge the rest.
Aimee jumped to the ground, which was an easier jump then from the
building, for she had been on the second story.
Before continuing to run, Aimee stopped to catch her breath. The poor
girl's appearance was dreadful. Her clothes were torn and bloodied, her
long black hair was awry and matted, and she was still bleeding profusely.
At a rapid pace, Aimee began to wander off into the nearby forest in
search of a water source. For over half an hour she wandered, unable to
locate any such stream or creek. At last, Aimee's luck changed.
At first she almost missed it; she was so exhausted. By sheer luck
alone she stepped into the cold stream. Very slowly, Aimee began washing
herself off. When she was done, she tore portions of her once white shirt
into pieces and then used the pieces of the shirt to bind her many wounds
together to stop them from bleeding any more.
Once she was done, Aimee moved upstream while walking in the water.
After she had gone far enough that she could not see the point she had
started, Aimee flopped down at the base of a nearby tree.
Before she knew what was happening, Aimee found that she kept nodding
off. It was not long, however, until Aimee gave up and was soon snoozing
off.
