You open your mouth, eyes still closed,
And it begins to seem you’ve posed—
Preparing for the lashes of the old times;
Wounds that cannot be healed by my rhymes.
Closed eyes with thoughts of yesteryear—
It’s been so long, but in your memory was it seared.
So long, but you cannot forget a thing
And these days, you can’t even sing.
Don’t you remember? It was once your joy—
And then you’d smile at me, oh so coy.
I knew you wanted to have some fun,
So I joined in, under a golden sun.
Closed eyes, and a smile lights up your face;
You’re saved from it now, with God’s grace.
The shame is gone, the pain gone, too.
It’s all disappeared—gone right down the loo.
So much has changed o’er all these years—
Years of smiles, years of tears.
But your smile was always my delight,
And so my heart at last takes flight.
