Fading Spirit

Chapter 3: Guardian

Brice’s jaws nearly hit the ground when he got a clearer view of who had literally break-and-enter his dorm. It was the same girl that he had saw at the rooftop for a few moments. The girl quickly turned around with her dangerous orange eyes looking at the person who had just entered. Brice was slightly taken back from the hazardous look on her face that was directed right at him. Her eyes suddenly soften seeing that it was only him and smiled innocently at him.

“Brice Cook?” She asked with the softest voice he had ever heard of. Although it was soft, it was still audible to him since he was paying all of his undivided attention to her. Brice just couldn’t help taking his eyes off of her thinking that she would once again disappear like she had on the rooftop. After a few more moments of constant staring, Brice finally realized that she had just asked him a question.

“Y-yeah.” Brice replied with embarrassment written over his forehead. It was quite obviously that he was staring at her but she didn’t seem to mind much.

“I’m Melody.” Introducing herself with the same beautiful voice that had rang within his ears, “I’m your guardian.” Brice squinted at her with a confused look and was near going to shout at her when he noticed that he was supposed to be kind.

“Um, what do you mean by ‘my guardian’?” Brice asked with a voice that gave the feeling of kindness and respect.

“I’m sure you have heard of Reeve. Am I not right?” Melody said looking at him with comforting eyes knowing that he’d have a somewhat angered reaction. Brice’s face tensed and his teeth slowly started to grind themselves together. His fists were balled together turning his knuckles white. Melody could somehow feel anger boiling within his body making him in a situation where he could possibly explode and scream at the guardian. Brice was so focused on his anger that he nearly forgot that Melody was present until he felt a soft hand touch his cheek. His eyes met orange ones that comforted him and cooled down his fierce rage that was rising in him only moments ago. Brice was completely speechless as he felt his cheeks tingling with tiny speckles of warmth; he was clearly blushing at Melody.

“I’m sorry…I know I shouldn’t have mentioned it to you but I don’t really have a choice. Reeve is after you. You might think that it is awkward how he could be after you when he had been banished by your parents. Apparently Reeve didn’t die and has also become an overlord of the underworld ruling many minions that would serve him with desire.” Melody said to Brice. Brice found it rather hard to take in. After so many years of thinking that his parents’ sacrifice had saved him from the evil man, at this point, it was a lie. His parents’ sacrifice was nothing.

“Get away from me…” He demanded. Brice didn’t want to take the fact that his parents just died for nothing. He was angry at Melody; why did she have to bring such a message to him when he was living happily in this life. Now she was ruining his life. Brice hated her inside out.

“Brice, listen to—“ Melody was cut short of her words and was slammed into the pure white wall. She winced in pain as she felt her back indent the wall and her body slowly descended to the floor. Brice glared at her with pure hatred.

Suddenly, he heard her mumbling something that was hardly audible to him, “Evil within this soul shall burn with unmatchable heat; sear in deep pain and not return; Ignite!” Fire encircled Brice and he looked all around him somewhat stunned by what she had just done to him. A black shadow emerged from his body and plastered onto the wall disappearing moments after. Brice’s eyes darted down to the coughing guardian that was sitting there holding her torso tightly. Being smacked into a wall and denting it wasn’t the best feeling ever.

“M--Melody!” Brice spluttered. His eyes widened only to have realized what he had done to her. He rushed to her and put and arm around her shoulders and another on the back of her legs, lifting her onto his bed. Brice frowned to himself feeling extremely guilty of what he had done to her. “I’m sorry.” He apologized to her. His navy hair covered his face hiding the salty tears the rolled off of his face. “I didn’t know what I was doing…Please forgive me…”

“Don’t worry, I’m fine. Don’t blame yourself or I’ll never get better.” Melody said shushing him with a single finger on his lips. Her voice was weak and barely audible but he could still make out the words that she was saying to him. “You were possessed by one of his minions.” Melody’s hand slowly found their ways to his cheek and placed it there wiping away the tears that remained. “I’ll be alright after resting for a bit. His minions won’t return for a while.” She smiled ever so gently at him making him smile back. Melody was the first person to make him smile – lest the first female aside from his passed away mother. Out of the blue, Brice’s stomach started to growl and he held it a bit embarrassed.

“I’ll be right back. Don’t go anywhere.” Brice told her. He couldn’t risk losing her like he lost his mother when he was a little boy. Melody nodded and gradually closed her eye to rest. He took a quick stroll to the superstore just across the street and brought some food, drinks and daily needs such as tooth paste and brush. Brice’s left hand held onto the bag of supplies as he took the elevator up to the 7th floor where his dorm was and quietly opened the door using the keys. He put down the white bag onto the table and looked back at his bedroom to find Melody gone.

“Melody?!” Brice’s voice echoed through the dorm. Where could she have gone! I told her not to go anywhere…please be alright, I can’t afford to loose you! He thought within his mind.
