If you could find one item that could improve school safety, increase
the esteem of students, and offer an improved educational experience for
students and teachers, would you be interested in learning more about this
item? The answer, of course, would be, yes. But what is this magical item?
What is this item that many schools have used to improve their educational
environment? What is this item that has brought family arguments to a stop
and raised school safety? Uniforms, yes, school uniforms.
Safety at school has always been a major topic when speaking to
educators. Teachers and administrators often ask, "How do you keep people
out of the school who don't belong there?" One way, is the use of school
uniforms. When someone who is not a student shows up at school without a
uniform, he or she will stand right out. In Los Angeles, California, gang
violence in school decreased when students had to wear school uniforms, and
gangs could not wear their colors. This was a major accomplishment for
school safety. And the same holds true for schools without gangs.
Wearing school uniforms have shown an increase in the self-esteem of
students. Without school uniforms, many students would worry about how they
look, what they wear, and if they can impress someone else. With school
uniforms, you have an even playing field - everyone dresses the same, so
there is no major competition to see who is dressed "better" than anyone
else. However, many students say they want to be "individuals." They say
they do not want to wear school uniforms. They seem to feel that if they
wear school uniforms, it will take away their essence as a different
person. But in reality, wearing the uniforms does not take away a person's
individuality. What uniforms actually do for the person is to accentuate
their inner self, which is the true expression of a person's self-worth,
not fancy clothing.
The overall educational process is helped a great deal by the wearing
of school uniforms. In both Boston, Massachusetts and Huston, Texas,
studies have been done to show that students feel better about themselves,
learn at a quicker pace with less distractions, and the overall morale of
the school increases with the use of school uniforms. The school then
becomes a more nurturing environment where students can learn. Parents have
reported in these school districts that they have fewer problems with their
children while they get them ready to school. Children will care more about
getting their homework done, than having to worry about what they are going
to wear the next day.
Overall, school uniforms have proven a significant advantage to
school districts that have bought into this idea. These school districts
have reported that the overall safety of their school has improved the self-
esteem, and the urge to learn with many of the students has improved, and
the entire educational environment of the school has been enhanced. For
these three main reasons and many more, school uniforms have become a key
to opening successful avenues for many students and schools throughout the
world.
A/N: This is a progressive essay I had to write, but I think it's a good essay that should be shown to others. It's an issue that stands high in school all over the world today. To be honest, I'm actually not all for Uniforms. The :for: was because it was most easiest to write, and ended up making a good point and turning out to be a rather good essay. But what do you think? You, the reader, have an opinion. Tell me what you think, or tell me about how I did on my essay. Please REVIEVW! Thanks.
