I Love You

I love you
Words that sound pretty
But mean nothing at all
In this world of fragile sorrows
Where love is passed around
Like fruitless wisdom
And lies
And words like smile
And death
And style

In days like these
We wouldn't know love
If we really truly saw it
We may say love today
But in a year
We won't remember
Why it was so important
In the first place
And the pictures in the picture frames
Will change
And never be the same

In days like these
I will proclaim
To the world
My love for you all
But soon
The pictures will fade
Out of memory and time
And song
And rhyme
And we'll see each other
Ten years from now
And a hug will be uncomfortable
And two words will be forced
And where did our dreams go?

I'm living in a flat
In Edmonton
With one bedroom
And a television
Not in an attic
With paintings
And I don't paint anymore
Because it reminds me of you
And what we said we would do
And the picture fades
Just like the aging portrait of Dorian Grey
And I'll live forever in lingo
Waiting for the color to come back
Into your face
And my memory

I love you.
