Finding the Truth

Marty’s Story

Danica yelled, "Hey Marty you in Saturday?" I turned to see one of my friends Danica Mc Kuller. She was running at break neck speed to reach me. That’s one thing that makes Dani, Dani! She’s an awesome runner.

I replied, "What are we doin’ Dani?"

"Skatin’" She replied.

I groaned, "Last time we went ice skatin I nearly broke a hip!"

She laughed, "No stupid, roller skating at the Roll Around!"

I asked, "Is Tristan, Mike, or Molly comin’ or is this a date?"

She said, "Ah! So you’ve finally picked up on the fact I like you! Very good Marty! No actually the whole gang’s comin." Now you’re probably wondering what she meant by the whole gang. I have the group of friends we are known through out school as the Destiny Group. Everyone assumes we were put together one summer by total fate. This is true I’ll get to that in a moment.

"Sure count me in Dani. See ya tomorrow!" As I walked home I made a mental check list of what to do before tomorrow. It consisted of:

* Comb and gel hair

* Iron clothes

* Check for food between teeth

As I made this list I realized how stupid it was. Like Dani would care! I stepped into my house and called out, "Grandma I’m home!" She called back saying there was cookies in the kitchen for me and Gretchen and I was suppose to save some for Gretch. I ate then ran upstairs to do my homework for school so I could go skating tomorrow. To my parents, Aaron and Arianna , school is more important than friends. I guess they’d know they’re both doctors.

Now how fate brought the Destiny Group together. We all were at the same summer camp and we were all placed in the same cabin just the 8 of us. Dani, Molly, Tatiana, Mike, Tristan, Joe, Sky, and Me. Then a huge storm came and flooded the path ways so we were the only group stuck in our cabins. The other kids thought it’d be funny if they told the councilors we were on the bus and leave us there. The councilors assumed one of the others had gotten the eight of us and left.

We couldn’t get out and after an hour T. said, "This is so stupid! They shoulda been able to get to us by now!" She opened the door water started to flood in. She slammed the door shut.

Joe said, "I guess not!"

Sky muttered, "Thank you captain obvious." Joe retaliated causing Sky to slam him up against a wall. I tried to pry them apart and got a nasty threat from Sky. "If you like your face the way it is Marty I suggest you stay out."

Dani said, "Guys chill! I’m sure a quarter to an hour they’ll come and get us." Tristan pulled the brawl apart. Dani was proven wrong an hour later.

Mike said, "SURE a QUARTER TO AN HOUR THEY’LL GET US!"

Molly said, "How about we talk about somethin besides getting outta here?"

"Sure," I said. I was up for hearing something besides bickering. I suggested, "How about our lives?" For the next seven hours I found out that :

Sky was from an Navajo tribe and was named "Sky" because his mother was sworn to name her first son Sky in honor her tribe’s original sign and her tribal zodiac. Tatiana was born in Russia and was an ice skater. Also that she moved to the states with her parents and 2 brothers, Ilea, and Yuri when she was 7. Tristan was a star on his 10th grade Football team and played the Violin in his schools orchestra He lived with his mother till he was sixteen because of his parents divorce when he was 9. When he was 16 he got his own apartment and is living there now. Mike was a "Jock" he played 7 different sports as a Freshman these included; Soccer, Basketball, Baseball, Football, Cross Country, Track and Field, and Bowling. And was good at all 7! Dani is the states leading runner in cross country’s 2m(.7 mi.) at a 12.50 seconds! And the record holder for the pole vault in Track and Field at 5m (16 ft) Molly is a twin and she and her twin play violin and flute in the school’s orchestra. Also that she spends $900 on a new wardrobe every Christmas! Joe is a computer "geek" who has a straight A average and was President of Student Council for the last 4 years for his grade. Me that I was the Vice president of my graduating class and lead scoring shooter in Basketball and that I have a younger sister named Gretchen.

Now you probably want a description: Sky has light brown skin with dark black hair with tiny brown eyes. He is about 5’8 and was going into Sophomore year. He was already elected to be the Treasurer of his class. Tatiana is short(around 5’2) with long blonde hair and blue eyes with a cute Russian accent. She went into the eighth grade with the position of lead skater on her school’s ice skating team. Tristan is a tall guy, he has to be pretty close to 6 ft., with dark brown hair and large brown eyes and is very muscular which makes him a hit with the girls (especially the cheerleaders!). He was going to be a Junior and was already elected Representative of his home room at the end of last year. Mike is Puerto Rican so he has the tan skin with the curly brown/ black hair. He stands at an average height of 5’7 ½. He is the leading top receiver in football in his debut year as a freshman. He went into his sophomore year already named captain! Dani is of course a hit on the track and field team as well as cross country. She’s got medium flowing auburn hair with small green eyes. At 5’4 she’s at a perfect height for running as well as president of the Freshman Class. Molly is a tall Sophomore at 5’7 and she’s got short brown/blonde hair with cute hazel eyes. She’s our "fashion director" of the group the "Fashion Police" if you will. She is the president of the Fashion club! Joe is a 5’8 Freshman and has medium black hair and glasses that hide his green eyes. He is Mr. K’s favorite student (The computer teacher) and President of the Computer Club. How did we ever guess? I still like Joe he’s a cool guy.

At that moment my parents called, "Marty! We have to talk now." I came down the steps and went into my living room where my dad shut the wood doors whispering to Grandma.

I only caught , "Keep Gretch occupied." I was wondering what I did now. As far as I can remember I didn’t do anything wrong, maybe they wanted me to quit basketball or we were gonna move away! My Mom came over and hugged me. I was wondering what was up. My Dad said, "Marty we have some pretty bad news for you."

I screamed, "I am NOT moving away from the gang!"

Mom chuckled and said, "No, if only it were that easy. Well Marty you know we love you very much and it really hurts me to tell you this. I didn’t want to mention it till you were older but circumstances change………" She drifted off.

Dad said, "Well, we figured it was time for you to start finding the truth. So here it is up front Marty, you’re not really ours."

I said, "I’m adopted?" My Mom and Dad nodded. I said, "So what’s that got to do with anything? So big deal?"

My Mom said, "It is a big deal Marty, Your parents want to meet you and take you back."

I choked, "Take me back? So I am moving away from all my friends."

My Dad said, "No, No, they live in the same complex that Molly does the floor above her."

I said, "So no moving away?"

My mom choked out, "Only from us. We’ve arranged it so you live with us for one year and you then live with them for a year and so on until you go off to college."

I said quietly, " When do they want to meet me, the filth?"

Mom yelled, "Don’t say that Marty!"

I yelled back, "Why they’ve been that close! How come 15 years later?"

My Dad said, "Trust me Marty I’ve met with them they’ve just never been financially stable enough."

I said, "Oh Come off it dad, if they live in the same complex Molly does they’ve got to be really rich! Look at Molly’s Family!"

My Dad said, "I know there ‘New money’ as Molly’s parents would call them. They just inherited a large amount of money through your father’s new promotion and your mother’s new success. Now, Marty they told me they want to see you as soon as possible. So I told them tomorrow at their house around 3 o’clock."

I said, "But the gang’s going skating!" My Mom said, "Marty, if they’re truly your friends they’ll understand, isn’t this a little more important?"

I said, "I guess. Can I be excused to call Dani and cancel as well as Tatiana?"

My Mom said, "T? Why T?"

I answered, " Just to clear my head Tati is really good for things like that." She nodded I left and went up to my parents room. I had absolutely no intention of calling Dani. I desperately needed to talk to T. So I sat down and dialed Tatiana’s cell phone number. See, Tatiana tricked her parents into it saying that it was an American culture thing. So I got the ring knowing Tatiana was hearing the rings to the sound of "The Entertainer".

She picked up and said, "Hey Marty, what’s up?"

I responded, "T. I need some advice."

Tatiana said, "Let me get comfy this can take a bit." I heard her plop on her bed and throw a few things off. Crash clunk, plop.

I said, "Tati, what just dropped?"

She answered, "My Harry Potter books. Okay I’m ready now what’s wrong, you sound depressed."

I said, "What! I don’t sound infuriated?"

She laughed, "No you sound depressed."

"Oh T," I groaned back, "What am I going to do!" Then I related the whole story back to T.

At the end she said, "They want you to move in with them after what!? One meeting? That’s not fair!"

I said, "What to me? or who?"

Tati said, "To everyone, you your parents now, them, your friends."

I laughed, "What! You guys? How is this unfair to you?"

She said, "Easy that means you gotta suffer with Molly! So you’ll be all upset cuz of her nagging at you! " I laughed with in the last hour I forgot how good it feels to laugh. T. said, "Yah you’ll be badgered every morning with your "Terrible Fashion!" I kept laughing. T. always brings out the best in everyone who’s life she’s touched. I told her about not going tomorrow she said, "That’s too bad Marty, I’d tell everyone but, I’m not going either. Got ice skating preliminaries at 7."

I said, "So, skatin’s over at 4!" T said, "Yah gotta be there by 4:30!"

"So?" I responded.

She said, "look there’s no way I can go get home get dressed, get dinner, get my skates sharpened and go! Remember it takes me 45 minutes to get there! "

"Oh, that would sum things up. So who should I tell? I can’t trust Dani……"

Tatiana said, "Well, this may sound out there but what about Mike?"

I said, "Mike!? Yah he’ll tell Dani before Dani could tell anyone!"

"Got IT! Whada bout Tristan?"

I thought aloud, "Yah Tristan would understand cuz his parents divorced and he’d know about things like this and wouldn’t tell Dani. He’d know how crazy it can be! Thanks T.! Talk to you later!"

"Bye Marty, hope it works out!" I heard the phone click.

I hung the phone up then picked it back up and dialed Tristan’s phone number. See! The advantages of living on your own! No one to share lines with!

He picked up and said, "Hey Sabrina! What’s up?" I started to howl out laughing! He said, "Oh Marty it’s you! What’s up?" I told him what I told Tatiana.

And then said, "So can I trust you to tell the gang a little lie?" I proceeded to tell him what I told Tatiana.

Trist said, "Of course that’ll be pretty rough to tell that story to Dani, bluntly and up front, of course you’d care if I did tell her!" He started laughing.

I screamed, "Tristan I thought I could trust you!"

Tristan said, "Course! I’ve never let you down. Have I?"

I smiled and told him, "No Never."

He said, "I’ve always got you guys covered." I thanked him and went down stairs for dinner. Dinner was a silent affair Mom tried to say something but she always choked. Gretch knew something was up she kept squirming in her seat. I went to bed scared to death and nervous. What if they didn’t like me? What if they thought I was the rudest most undisciplined child this side of the Atlantic? So what! I realized if they hated me they’d have to give me back. I barely slept that night.
