Somewhere On Fullerton
Passion. Everyone has a passion. If they don't, they're not truly alive. This story, this account, is about the passion of a small group: music. It's that simple. Well, not quite, Emo Punk is the soul of this story and the people involved.
Life is a strange conception. It sucks, it's awesome, it gives us memories and nightmares and we all have a way of getting through the hard times and create the good. And through it all there are friends.
Adam and Anna are 17-year-old twins that have gone through a lot. For a start, they're Scottish. But more seriously, they lost their parents at a very early age. Their mother died when they were toddlers and their father took off not long after. That left their aunt, Caroline, to bring them up. Neither would ever complain, she was a great woman who sacrificed a lot for them and they'd never forget that.
Luck finally came to them not so long ago. Caroline won the lottery, enough to give them a stable life wherever the three could decide, East Kilbride, their hometown, wasn't an option. Fortunately they all instantly agreed on California. To the twins it was the homeland and to Caroline it was year round sunshine and exotic. As soon as the twins had finished 4th year and gotten their standard grades the family fled the uncomfortable town they'd been stuck in since birth.
East Kilbride was a 'new town' created as a direct result of overcrowding and a lack of housing after the Second World War. It sat on the outskirts of Glasgow and was seen as some amazing place, so perfect geographically, so desirable to live in. But in truth it was run down already and grew like cancer across the green land of Scotland. The streets were paved with Ned's (Non-Educated Delinquents) most could be quietened with an intellectual word or two but the rest wouldn't think twice about inflicting some kind of damage to someone who dared to be different. Walking the streets was a nerve-wracking thing for two emo punks like Adam and Anna so getting out was always the ultimate goal.
Then it happened. They were suddenly in Fullerton, CA. It was the most surreal small middle-class town. It was so much more friendly and bright. There were still those who looked at the twins like they had horns because of the way they looked but the fear of bumping in to some cheap gold, sport's clothes wearing Ned was gone, now there were punks and emo kids, more than two in the same town! There were shows every single week! There were TV channels with decent music; there were decent TV channels! All those cult movies or one off's were now easy to come by and record stores had more than one shelf of punk! It was all so new, so perfect. The twins had been dreaming of such an environment for years.
The unconventional family moved into a reasonably sized house, 4 bedrooms, 2 living rooms, a kitchen, a toilet and a bathroom. It was spacious but not ridiculous. More importantly they all had enough space to have a decide amount of privacy. The three shared many traits. They each needed alone time every so often, to just get away from people and problems and human life. It all became so trivial sometimes but after some private time, locked in a room with some movies or CD's they were fine and ready to deal with anyone who needed them.
Caroline had invested in the local hotel and liked to get involved whenever she could. She had a business management degree and was glad to put it into practise the way she had always dreamed. She had tried to convince the twins to go back to school but both had been against it. They complained that they had standard grades and that was enough. That was when the deal was made.
Caroline didn't want the twins to have no qualifications and no job so she bought an old abandoned house for the twins and converted it into a store/venue/social club. The twins were to run it and take care of things while Caroline was the silent partner and took care of the legalities and money. The house was called C.U.E.K. It was a play on two things: one, it was an abbreviation of Cheer Up Emo Kid and two; it was a good bye to East Kilbride (EK). The place made enough to survive and it gave the twins some responsibility.
They sold Emo and Punk related items and cult merchandise on the first floor. So that was everything from CD's to comics. It was a popular hang out for the local scene and they held small gigs in the basement, which had become legendry. The second floor was the social area. The same 15 or so kids hung out there everyday and night because it was friendly and it was a home where they could talk about their shared interests and watch movies or listen to music. It was a large family and there was never any trouble. Unity, that's all there was. It was a Gilman street of their own.
The first people to come to the house were Amber and Ender. They came in very shyly. They didn't trust that such a place could be real and in their town. But it was real and they immediately forged a bond with Adam and Anna. From that first day the four had become close friends.
Amber was a quiet, good-natured person. She was pretty much into emo. She was the sensitive, insightful one of the group. Also the budding writer. She was the kind of person who would absorb everything around her and build a great understanding about it. That's why she's so quiet around those she isn't familiar with but Adam and Anna soon saw her lose her inhibitions after a few weeks getting to know each other.
Ender, real name Jason Wiggins, was the uber geek. He was lovable as hell but a complete geek none the less. Amber had nicknamed him Ender after she first read Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card as they shared the second name Wiggins. That was over five years ago and since then it had stuck. Ender and Amber were the outcasts of their school and the town so when C.U.E.K opened and Adam and Anna appeared it was a dream come true. It brought a small town scene together.
