Can you see the children come?
There is brightness in their eyes
And in their hearts they dream
As they are lifted into life's skies
Somewhere over the rainbow
Even farther up high
No one sings of this spectrum
In any lullaby
Yet over they march
The children steadfast
Into their adulthood
They've entered at last
You are young and brave
But you'll soon enough find
Courage isn't all it takes
To master the human mind
Shadows of the shining stars
Contort this rainbow's hue
Across shadows they will walk
Over yellow, green, blue
To find the pot of gold
That greets the end of their quest
And with that pot of gold
They can find their final rest
Reach for the shining cauldron!
It is the ultimate gold
Not until they've grasped cold metal
Can they succumb and grow old
The sun looks down in fiery mirth
The stars above us shine with glee
While all the heavens rejoice and sigh
The moon mourns in sympathy
For she too was fooled, like they are now
She reached too high to gain the gold
Now she discovered the mighty secret
Alas! but now she's far too old
And they trod over the arching rainbow
That sun and rain hath make
Give what they may spare, not a penny more
And learn to do nothing but take
Somewhere over the rainbow
They march over heather and hill
No closer to their goal than before
Yet on and on they plod still
They will never discover the secret
Until they are too old to make amends
A pot of gold at the end of the rainbow?
My child, a rainbow never ends.
