Future Unfought

This sliding sense of selflessness,
Slowly slipping into darkness,
Taking with it the carelessness,
Caused by all the selfishness,
Exacerbated by the licentiousness,
It carries itself with righteousness,
But covers itself in liveliness.

It seems to see only the loveless,
Those who would be the lifeless,
But passes over the selfless,
Those who touch the lightless,
Who help the fortuneless,
Can only find the helpless,
Making themselves the sightless.

One without all this is lessened,
Singular seemingly deadened,
Always alone and never learned,
And will find themselves burned,
By a life they never found or earned,
A future that is for them straightened,
A future that is nothing but an end.

A future fought against you see,
A future fought not by you or me,
Or even anyone aside from thee,
Fought against itself to be free,
And tied itself longingly to a tree,
That gives it a beauteous lee,
Protects the unfought for time to be.

And selflessness slides away.
