When I go out to meet the world,
must I wear my emotional make-up?
Lip-gloss my words with jokes,
brighten my eyes with laughter?
Must I cover the tear-stains on my soul
as if they were pimples, rouge
my melancholy complexion?
Hide the sadness deep inside,
force a fake smile on my face,
and smooth down all complications?
And if I don't –
will nobody like me?
