The drunken knight and the docile dragon
Upon the banks of river wide
the knight with steed did stand.
A princess 'pon the other side
a crossing did demand,
for she was seemingly in distress
from a fiery dragon.
But the knight's brave mind was all a mess
from drinking from a flagon!
His speech was slurred, his headache roared,
his armor all askew.
The dragon would have surely gored
this knight, and his horse too!
But the princess did not fear for life;
She never did despair.
She knew the dragon's kindly wife
was simply cleaning her lair.
A custom had developed;
in that far off, strange land:
when chores or tasks enveloped
princesses would lend a hand!
The knight, he did not know this,
being from far off Germany.
So when he tried to blow a kiss
the Princess thought him silly.
Then the brave one began to try
to cross the raging river.
But the water rose above his eyes
and the coldness made him shiver.
So knight and steed had to pay a toll
to use a wooden boat.
But soon the bow began to fall!
Their conveyance didn't float!
They barely made it to the shore;
they very nearly died!
Then due to drunkenness for sure,
he rolled about and cried.
"Good sir, brave knight," the princess said,
"I know not why you weep,
for I'm in no harm of being dead,
nor locked in castle keep.
I'm simply helping Mrs. Flame,
while she does her great spring cleaning,
by entertaining Mr. Flame,
who has no thoughts of eating."
Well the knight was now taken aback:
What did the princess mean?
He'd rather have her on his back
and slay this dragon green!
But she was right, he relented
and put his great sword down.
Then vomiting once, he repented
of his former alcohol.
Now he and she happily reside
next door to neighbor dragons.
Occasionally both sirs will meet inside
and drink beer from giant flagons.
