""Maybe it's the schools, industry... the government... and the whole
system that are discouraging us."
Ooh... the evil system. The system that provides protection, education, and money for your parents. Its one bad system we've got here in America. Nobody's happy! Everyone is wondering why those darned schools keep teaching kids! And why all the industries out there employ people and make money for them!"
My reply: Do ever learn about the horrors brought to this world by America in your school? The lies our government has told? In the Vietnam War, THE AMERICAN SOLDIERS WENT THROUGH TOWNS RAPING AND MURDERING UNARMED WOMEN AND CHILDREN. There are many Unemployed people in America. There are also people who have jobs, but can hardly support their families. America has homeless shelters, food stamps, welfare, and other programs for unemployed people. Not everyone in America is happy with the system. As for protection. Look at 9/11 and all the intelligence that the FBI and CIA had. We were just too full of ourselves to realize that bad things can and do happen to the "invincible" Americans.
Nemomen- "This is all very nice, but what exactly is the point? Censorship is an active part of society, and has been since time out of mind. It's the way society works. True, to most people it's morally wrong, but most people either choose not to see the censorship in society or rationalize that it's ok, because it's for the good of society.
My point being...this has been going on for millenia, and will go on for about as long. Why get angry over it? Just push the limits as much as you can get away with, do your part in provoking thought, and live life while being happy. No need to get mad about it."
Me- why should we just stand for it? Censorship will get worse. Look at what happened in Nazi Germany. Artists were killed for expressing their opinions. Is that what you want?
RCS- "The First Amendment says, and I quote, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
The 14th Amendment expands the Bill of Rights, including the First Amendment, to the state and local governments. Is the PMRC really violating anyone's First Amendment rights? Let's see who you have listed here as supporters of the PMRC. Tipper Gore and Susan Baker were acting as private citizens when they formed the PMRC. Tipper may have had a little clout because her husband was a senator, but she had no law-making ability. Remember, the First Amendment only protects against the passage of laws, not the actions of private citizens.
Let's go further down your list of PMRC supporters. Coors: privately owned company. American Airlines: private company. Marriot Corp, Orryland Hotel, Merrill Lynch: all private companies with no law-making power. Smokey Robinson has as much right as an American to speak out in favor of the PMRC, as you have to speak out against it. And as a private organization, the PMRC has the right to their voice as much as you have the right to your voice.
Again, I saw no law-making entity among your list of PMRC backers, so there is no First Amendment violation going on with PMRC's activities. When federal, state, or local lawmakers start passing laws to limit free speech, that's when you can bring the First Amendment into play. Crack a book sometime."
Me: Number 1, I think that you should read chapter 3. It has some information about the hearing in front of the senate committee. Also, there were several women in the PMRC who just happened to be married to politicians. Tipper Gore is married to Albert Gore, who was a senator and vice-president. Susan Baker is married to James Baker. He's the politician who wears women's underwear. The list goes on.
Maybe you should "crack a book sometime."
By the way. Thanks to everyone who reviewed even if the review was negative. Keep reviewing.
